Brenas lies in the heart of the Ruffe landscape and forms a link between the Monts d’Orb and the Clermontais (Lac du Salagou). Hiking trails, a mountain bike descent and the parish church offer visitors different ways to explore the area. The Les Ruffes loop trail passes through the red landscape; its starting point is at the church in the village centre. If you are considering Brenas as a destination, you can choose your own focus between nature, activity and architecture.

Hiking the Les Ruffes loop trail

The Les Ruffes loop trail is described as an easy hike, 7 kilometres long, with 220 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of 3 hours. It starts at the car park in front of the church in the village centre of Brenas and follows the Ruisseau de la Combe through the Ruffe landscape. The stated duration provides a specific timeframe for planning your day; check the current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.

Along the route, you will pass through a cattle wintering area and plots of land with cows and calves. Dogs must be kept on a leash there. Also follow the latest local guidance on the route and agricultural use. These conditions are part of planning the hike and should be taken into account when choosing your day trip.

Red landscapes and views

The red Ruffes define the character of the loop trail. In spring, bright green pastures and golden-yellow broom create a colourful contrast with the reddish soil. The trail offers views of the Castellas de Malavieille, the Ruffe landscape and the valley. You can take in the scenery both along the trail and from the named viewpoints.

The hike combines these landscape views with a specific route along the Ruisseau de la Combe. The distance, elevation gain and duration are clearly defined points of reference; they set this hike apart from simply driving to a viewpoint or taking a short visit to the village centre. Even so, it is important to check the current condition of the route when planning.

Mountain biking on the GTMC VTT

A mountain bike route associated with Brenas is also described: on the GTMC VTT, a technically challenging, rocky descent follows Brenas. Its technical difficulty may vary depending on the weather and maintenance, so take current route guidance into account. This descent differs considerably from the Les Ruffes loop trail, which is rated easy. The two activities involve different levels of difficulty and should not be compared solely on the basis of the stated hiking time.

The parish church in Brenas

The Église paroissiale de L’Assomption-de-Notre-Dame is located in Brenas. It has an elongated floor plan, a single-nave interior and a groin-vaulted ceiling. The church may date from the 17th century; it was extended and altered in the 19th century. The 17th-century dating is therefore explicitly uncertain, while the extension and alterations are attributed to the 19th century.

The wider region

In the wider area around Brenas, the descent beyond Brenas and Mas Bas offers an impressive view of a Ruffe canyon. In the background, the Castellas de Mérifons sits on a volcanic rocky outcrop. This viewpoint adds another landscape vista in the surrounding region to the views from the Les Ruffes loop trail.

The source of the Salagou River is also located in this wider area, at the Col de la Merquière, on the municipal boundary between Dio-Valquières and Carlencas. Together with Brenas’s location between the Monts d’Orb and the Clermontais, this geographical setting gives an impression of how the village fits into the surrounding landscape.
