Church history, hiking trails and wine tastings offer different ways to explore Siran. Saint-Baudile and the Porte de la Bade are reminders of its medieval past; Notre-Dame de Centeilles combines Gothic architecture with frescoes. The routes described here bring the garrigue, limestone plateaus, pine forest and vineyards to the fore. One practical difference for planning: one route is described with its distance and approximate duration, while the other focuses mainly on its starting point and landscape.

Architectural history between church and chapel

The church of Saint-Baudile is first mentioned in written records in 1208 and was rebuilt in the early 15th century. These dates refer to different milestones: 1208 is the first written mention, not the date of its reconstruction. At the Porte de la Bade, the clock tower above the gate catches the eye. The gate is one of Siran’s surviving medieval gates and offers further evidence of the town’s former fortifications, alongside its churches.

Notre-Dame de Centeilles reveals a different layering of history: the present-day chapel is Gothic in style, dates from the 13th and 15th centuries, and was built on the site of a Romanesque church. The chapel contains remarkable frescoes. Its location at the foot of Pic Saint-Martin also places its architectural history within the landscape. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance, as access rules may change.

Two hiking trails, different highlights

The Siran La Garrigue hiking route is an easy 8.3-kilometre circular walk, taking approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. It crosses limestone plateaus covered in dense garrigue vegetation. The route is marked in blue as a local trail of particular interest. From Siran, the directions follow the route towards “Chapelle des Centeilles” to the car park in front of the chapel. Markings and access conditions may change locally; check them before setting off. Take care in extreme heat or heavy rain.

The Siran–Centeilles hiking route starts at the Notre-Dame de Centeilles chapel and passes through pine forest and vineyards. The two trails therefore have different highlights: Siran La Garrigue foregrounds the distance and approximate duration alongside the garrigue landscape, while Siran–Centeilles focuses on its stretches through woodland and vineyards. When choosing, consider whether a specific time estimate for planning your day or these particular landscape features matter more to you. Plan each hike using its own description and check local conditions before setting off.

Wine tasting in a historic cellar

Mon Jardin de Vignes offers wine tastings in its cellar. The business is based in a former cellar dating from 1907, where the wines are made using traditional methods. The tasting therefore combines a specific detail about the cellar’s history with the winemaking process. If you are planning a wine tasting, check the current options in advance, as tasting arrangements may change. The buildings, the two hiking descriptions and the wine tasting offer different ways to explore Siran; there is no need to follow a set order.
