Roqueredonde can be explored through two distinct highlights: the Escandorgue landscape and its culturally significant sites. When planning your visit, it helps to start with a simple question: would you like to focus on a hiking route or a visit to Lérab Ling? The Notre-Dame-des-Neiges chapel in Mas de Mourié and La Borie Noble also offer their own insights into the area's history.
Basalt Plateau and Routes
Roqueredonde lies on the Escandorgue basalt plateau, at an altitude of between 450 and 850 metres. The area is bordered by the Orb and its tributaries. Part of the wooded landscape lies within the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park. This reveals different aspects of the surroundings: the high plateau, the area's river boundaries and the inclusion of some wooded areas in the natural park.
The Passa Meridia Route No. 10 crosses the Escandorgue and leads to the village of Roqueredonde. Another specific route description is the Roqueredonde–Le plateau de l’Escandorgue hiking route: it runs through a state forest and includes the Lérab Ling Buddhist temple as part of the route. Check route conditions before setting out on this hike.
The route near Engayresque also offers a useful point of reference: close to the Engayresque Buddhist temple, it leads to Roqueredonde's overnight stop accommodation. The routes mentioned can be distinguished by their respective features: crossing the Escandorgue, passing through a state forest and Lérab Ling, or connecting to the overnight stop accommodation.
Lérab Ling and Visiting the Temple
Lérab Ling is a Tibetan place of prayer and retreat. Its architecture is inspired by Tibetan monasteries in the Himalayas, and the site also features a seven-metre-high Buddha statue. Guided temple tours take place on Sunday afternoons and on certain public holidays. Check the temple calendar before travelling.
The guided programme includes a presentation of the temple and a film about its history and purpose. Visitors can also walk independently around the temple on the esplanade. The guided tour and independent walks on the esplanade are therefore two different ways to visit, with neither requiring the other.
Church and Community
The parish church of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges in Mas de Mourié is now a chapel. It was probably built in 1690. La Borie Noble was founded in 1963 and is described in Roqueredonde as a community of people committed to non-violence. The dates refer to different events: the church's probable year of construction and La Borie Noble's founding.
In the wider area, La Borie Noble sells bread, pastries and pizzas made with its own produce on Saturdays after 1 p.m. The day and time may change, so check these details in advance if you plan to shop there.
Plan Your Stay
If you are looking for a holiday rental, it is best to decide what to focus on before comparing options: should a guided temple tour appointment shape your stay, or should a hiking route? For a temple visit, the calendar is relevant; for a hike, check the route and conditions before setting out.
