Tourbes combines historic architecture, outdoor activities and wine tastings, offering different ways to shape your stay. On a walk through the town, you’ll pass numerous houses dating from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. A nature trail leads to seasonal plant-watching, while the fitness trail and pump track offer other ways to spend active time outdoors. When planning your trip, you can arrange these activities according to your interests and the time of year.

History between the church and boulevards

The Église Saint-Saturnin is a 14th-century church in the style of southern French Gothic architecture. Tourbes is first mentioned in 990. The houses along the walking route date from several later centuries, giving the townscape a different historical dimension from that of its early recorded mention. The boulevards also tell a story of change. The former ditches were filled in and turned into boulevards, along which elegant winegrowers’ houses were built in the 19th century. The town’s history thus brings together medieval architecture and evidence of a later winemaking era.

A trail for observing nature

The “À la découverte de l’orchidée sauvage” trail is 3 kilometres long, takes about an hour and is rated very easy. Depending on the season, several orchid and other plant species can be seen along the route. The time of year is therefore part of the planning: plant sightings vary depending on when you visit.

Outdoor activities for different interests

The fitness trail is near the village and is freely accessible year-round. Its exercise stations focus on endurance, flexibility and muscle strengthening. Tourbes’ pump track is suitable for cycling and riding scooters, as well as skateboarding and roller skating. These offer different ways to get active: the fitness trail has exercise stations, while the pump track is designed for riding on wheels. You can consider these activities regardless of whether nature-watching or exercise is the main focus of your trip.

Chapel, wine and August events

The Chapelle Saint-Roch stands on one of Tourbes’ hills, surrounded by vineyards. A path lined with fig trees leads to the chapel. A mass is celebrated there in mid-August, and Tourbes residents make a pilgrimage to attend; check the exact date for the year before your trip. For wine tastings, consider the wineries in Tourbes or the Cellier Saint-Roch, the local winemakers’ cooperative. Check visitor arrangements in advance.

Tourbes O’ Jazz is also held annually in August and began in 2012. The festival dates vary from year to year. The festival and the mass at the Chapelle Saint-Roch are separate events, so plan your travel dates around the relevant event if either is a priority. This lets you coordinate your stay with the August event that suits you, without treating the two as sharing a single date.

Getting here via the A75

Tourbes is served by a full interchange on the A75, just a few minutes away. This is a specific point of reference for travelling by road. Check current road conditions before setting off. Together with the town’s range of cultural, nature and leisure activities, this offers several reasons to visit: architecture and history, seasonal plants, outdoor exercise or an August event.
