Causses-et-Veyran lies in the Orb Valley and on the southern foothills of the Montagne Noire. To the south, the commune reaches the banks of the Orb; to the north, it extends to Mont Peyroux, its highest point. The riverbanks and northern ridge provide two distinct landmarks in the landscape.
Landscape between the Orb and Mont Peyroux
The Vallée de l’Orb ZNIEFF covers 634.35 hectares and includes Causses-et-Veyran. The wetlands along the river within this area include oxbow lakes, former gravel pits, riparian woodland and meadows. The Falaises de Landeyran have been protected as a registered site by a decree dated 3 December 1947. Landeyran is also a publicly accessible geological outcrop.
Fortified village and historic traces
The fortified village of Causses-et-Veyran forms a crescent north of the fortifications around the castle chapel. Within the fortifications, houses abut the perimeter wall; others span streets with vaulted passageways. The village’s character is shaped not only by individual buildings, but also by the relationship between the chapel, walls and streets.
The Prieuré Saint Server is one of the places you can visit in Causses-et-Veyran. The forge on Rue des Forges has been preserved in its original condition for two centuries. Inside, the blacksmith’s tools are displayed to bring the past to life and pass the knowledge of previous generations on to today’s generations.
The “Deux piles” consist of cylindrical structures that probably once supported an aqueduct. They have been listed as a Monument historique by a decree dated 30 July 1963. The protection categories differ: the Falaises de Landeyran is a registered site, while the “Deux piles” is listed as a Monument historique.
For trip planning, the contrast is clear: nature around the Orb and Landeyran is set against the village’s history at the fortifications, the priory and the forge.
Hiking and climbing
The Les Gourniès circular hiking trail is 13.2 kilometres long and rated moderate. It has 180 metres of elevation gain and 180 metres of descent, and runs through vineyards and small pine woods. Check the official trail conditions before setting out. The trail is less than a ten-minute walk from the “Causses-et-Veyran – Coopérative” bus stop. Check the stop’s transport information before travelling.
In addition to the 13.2-kilometre loop, there is a longer route: the Tour du Saint-Chinian au Faugères is 50 kilometres in total and includes a section from Causses-et-Veyran to Autignac. The 50 kilometres apply to the entire tour, not just this section.
Nearby, the Landeyran cliffs offer just over 50 climbing routes across two sectors, with grades ranging from 3 to 7c. Route details may change. To get there, pass through Causses-et-Veyran, then continue for two kilometres towards Saint-Nazaire-de-Ladarez. Local access conditions may change; check the information in advance.
