Campagnan brings together a wine-growing landscape, village heritage and a named wine-tourism route. The municipality lies between the wine-growing plain of the Hérault and the garrigue of the Causse d’Aumelas. This gives you two distinct landscape settings to consider when planning your trip: the plain, shaped by winegrowing, and the garrigue. In the village, the parish church of Saint-Geniès and the fountain in the historic centre offer two specific points of interest from a cultural-history perspective. If you would like to give your stay a particular theme, you can explore winegrowing, local history and landscape as different yet complementary perspectives.

Wine Route and Regional Produce

The wine-tourism route “Sur la route des Seigneurs de Montpellier” passes through Campagnan and carries the “Vignobles et Découvertes” designation. Campagnan also produces table grapes, which are offered for tasting. These provide two distinct ways to explore the area’s connection with wine: the route as a wine-tourism experience and a local product. You can make wine the focus of your trip or combine it with the village centre and its history. If you plan to attend a tasting, check the specific offer and dates in advance.

Village Centre and Local History

The parish church of Saint-Geniès is located in the village of Campagnan. In the historic centre, the village fountain is designated as a heritage feature worthy of protection; it is also regarded as an emblematic and unifying feature. Campagnan’s history dates back to the beginning of the 12th century. At that time, the village was dependent on Gellone Abbey; the enclosed settlement comprised nine farmsteads and ten houses. A later historical layer is marked by Campagnan railway station, associated with the creation of the Montpellier–Rodez railway line in 1867. The story thus spans from the settlement pattern of the early 12th century to the 19th-century railway line.

Getting There and Events

For bus travel, the Campagnan–Ancienne Gare stop is a useful landmark; it is served by the Saint-Jean-de-Védas–Adissan routes. Use the stop name when searching and check departure times shortly before your trip to match your travel dates, as routes and schedules may change. “Ancienne Gare” means “former railway station.”

One example of a local event with a clearly specified date is the Place-au-Terroir evening held on 24 July 2025 in front of the multipurpose hall. The Place-au-Terroir evenings in Campagnan in July 2025 featured gourmet markets, guided tours, pottery workshops and musical performances; the programme could vary from one date to another. If an event is important to your travel plans, check the latest dates and programme for your preferred visit.
