Valflaunès sits on a hill amid garrigue landscapes and vineyards. From here, you can enjoy views of Pic Saint-Loup and Hortus. If you’re looking for a hotel in Valflaunès, you can plan your stay around specific interests: wine, Romanesque heritage, landscapes or events each offer a different starting point for planning.
Garrigue, Hortus and protected landscapes
Mount L’Hortus lies within the commune. Its white limestone cliff is over 100 metres high and more than a kilometre long, providing a habitat for several pairs of birds of prey. Valflaunès’ location within the Pic Saint-Loup Natura 2000 site also shapes the natural environment. The site’s conservation objectives cover natural habitats, plant species and all animal species except birds. The commune does not lie entirely within this site. Valflaunès is also within the perimeter of the Hautes Garrigues du Montpelliérais Natura 2000 site, whose conservation objectives cover birds and their habitats. If you’re planning activities in these areas, check their boundaries and management plans; they may determine possible restrictions on activities.
Explore trails and wine
The Passa Meridia route reaches Valflaunès from Lac de Jeantou. From Valflaunès, the route follows a path between vineyards and pine trees to a junction. From there, continue towards the hamlet of Cazeneuve or the centre of Lauret. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Valflaunès lies in the renowned Pic Saint-Loup wine-growing region. Several wineries in the area cultivate the terroir and produce characterful wines. At Domaine UMA, a guided three-kilometre walk through the estate’s vineyards ends with a tasting of three wines. As seasonal availability should be confirmed, check before travelling. Château Boisset offers a cellar visit followed by a guided wine tasting, with or without an appointment. Visit arrangements may change; check the current details in advance. The visitor tour at Mas Bruguière is located at the foot of Pic Saint-Loup and the Hortus cliffs, and ends with a guided tasting of three cuvées. Confirm the booking details here too before travelling.
Romanesque architecture and local history
The Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens has a Romanesque structure. Its apse is built in the Lombard style with a calotte vault. The Chapelle d’Aleyrac was built in the 12th century as a Romanesque chapel; traces of frescoes can be found there. The Château de Viviourès survives as a ruin on a rocky spur of the Hortus cliffs. The Grotte de l’Hortus is also part of local history: traces of Neanderthals were discovered there, and the cave was inhabited from around 30,000 BC until the Visigothic period.
Events throughout the year
The Festa de la Vendemia takes place every October in Valflaunès, where it has been held since 2008. The festival includes a regional produce market, exhibitions in the village’s former barns and wine tastings. Check the dates and programme for the year in question. A flock from Sainte-Croix-de-Quintillargues passes through Valflaunès each year during the transhumance. For culture lovers, Théâtre Le Pas du Géant offers workshops for children, teenagers and adults; check the current programme in advance.
