Arboras is a village perched on a hill at the first foothills of the Larzac, at an altitude of 250 metres. The Château d’Arboras, local wine offerings and the walking trail at the Rocher des Vierges give a trip several different focuses: architectural history, tastings and a hike to a viewpoint. Before choosing a holiday rental, you can consider whether village and cultural heritage, wine or outdoor activity should shape your stay.
The Château and the Village
After several phases of restoration, the Château d’Arboras now displays its elegant 17th-century appearance. Listed as a historic monument are all its façades and roofs, the interior features including fireplaces with plaster decoration and ceramic hearths, and the heraldic floor in the tower on the first floor of the west wing. The protection thus covers specific parts of the exterior architecture as well as named interior details.
Different historical periods apply to the village and the château: Arboras retains the general appearance it had at the end of the 18th century and has a historic centre. The château’s elegant appearance, by contrast, dates from the 17th century and is the result of several phases of restoration. Looking at both, you can distinguish the village’s historical character from the château’s architectural history.
Scenery and Time Outdoors
Arboras is one of the municipalities in the Hautes Garrigues du Montpelliérais Natura 2000 site. The site is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA). The walking trail at the Rocher des Vierges offers a clearly measured activity: it is 3 kilometres long, takes 1 hour and 30 minutes, and is classed as very easy. Its length, duration and difficulty rating provide a clear basis for fitting this outing into your day’s plans.
The trail’s starting point is the Parking du Rocher des Vierges car park in Les Moulins, 34150 Arboras. From Saint-Saturnin, a 4-kilometre paved track leads there in the direction of the Rocher des Vierges. From the summit platform, the view extends to Mont Saint-Baudille and the Montagne de la Séranne. Mont Saint-Baudille itself is 837 metres high and can be reached by the road leading to Arboras; check locally for any temporary access restrictions.
Wine and Planning Your Visit
Tasting options also differ in their conditions. The cellar in the château’s north courtyard offers tastings of wines produced there; they are seasonal. So check the dates before your visit. At Domaine de la Réserve d’O, guided tours are available by prior arrangement. The estate also has its own tasting area and offers tastings; confirm the arrangements before you travel. Tours by appointment and the seasonal dates at the château provide different frameworks for planning.
In the Causse d’Arboras, Domaine de la Réserve d’O farms 12 hectares of vines biodynamically. At Domaine de l’Accent, selected white, rosé, red and sparkling wines are available for free tasting; confirm the arrangements for your visit in advance. The estate also offers organic wines from the Terrasses du Larzac. This makes it possible to distinguish between the different offerings by tasting format, wine categories and production method, without assuming that a visit can be arranged without prior planning.
