In Loupian, different forms of heritage meet routes through the countryside: the churches range from Romanesque architecture to Languedoc Gothic, the Musée de site Villa-Loupian showcases a Gallo-Roman wine estate, and the Voie Verte offers views over the Thau lagoon. Plan your stay around architecture, the museum, cycling or hiking routes, and seasonal events.
Churches between Romanesque and Gothic
The Église Saint-Hippolyte is a protected historic monument and a Romanesque building dating from the second half of the 12th century. Its single-nave layout comprises three barrel-vaulted bays. The façade retains corbels from a machicolation, probably used to defend the entrance; these suggest that the church was fortified.
The Église Sainte-Cécile offers a different architectural style: built in the 14th century in the Languedoc Gothic style, it is also protected as a historic monument. Its broad, single-nave layout has five bays. The pronounced buttresses are characteristic of this style. The Jardin Archéologique de Sainte-Cécile also contains the remains of an early Christian church.
Villa Loupian and local history
The Musée de site Villa-Loupian focuses on a Gallo-Roman wine estate. The museum traces six centuries of the site's history and economic activity. It complements the religious buildings by offering a distinct perspective on the area's past.
On the Villa grounds, paved paths have a 5 percent gradient, and all rooms are accessible. Confirm accessibility again before your visit. This will make it clear which specific conditions on the grounds you need to take into account.
Cycling and hiking
The 11.5 km Voie Verte is accessible from Loupian. The route offers views over the Thau lagoon and passes through the Crique de l'Angle, where birds gather. If you prefer a hike, you can start the 10 km Boucle de Marinesque à Cambelliès loop in Loupian. It reaches Lac de Cambelliès: the former bauxite mine has become a refuge for birds.
The two routes differ in both length and format: the Voie Verte is 11.5 km long, while the loop is 10 km. Before hiking, check the trail conditions and follow the current safety signage at Lac de Cambelliès.
Events and regional produce
Les Augustales takes place every summer at Villa Loupian, where it has been held for two decades. The 2026 programme included Celtic and Roman encampments, craft demonstrations, experimental archaeology and historical performances. The programme may vary from year to year; check the dates for the next edition.
The Wolf of Loupian is also part of local festival traditions: the totem animal appears on feast days, particularly at the traditional Languedoc fair held every March. Exact event dates may vary.
At Sanchez Huîtres, tours explain the different stages of oyster farming and end with a tasting. As visitor arrangements may change, it is best to confirm them in advance. The Marché traditionnel de Loupian offers fresh, regional and seasonal produce throughout the year; market days and opening details may also change. At a recurring summer evening event on Place de la République, producers, craftspeople and winemakers prepare country-style platters in front of visitors. Check the current dates and arrangements for this event.
Plan your stay around your interests
For architectural history, Loupian offers both Romanesque and Gothic religious architecture, as well as a museum on local history at Villa Loupian. If you want to focus on outdoor activities, choose between the Voie Verte and the loop hike to Lac de Cambelliès. Seasonal events and the oyster-farm tour, on the other hand, require checking specific dates or visitor arrangements.
