Puisserguier offers several distinct ways to enjoy a stay: the historic village’s spiral layout, cultural attractions such as the Écomusée, and the GR 787, which passes through the village. Wine and oil are also part of the picture. You can therefore plan your time around local history, hiking or regional produce, rather than treating all the attractions as a single itinerary.

Village layout and medieval traces

In the historic village of Puisserguier, the houses are arranged in a spiral around the Château de Puisserguier, forming a Circulade. The layout makes the relationship between the houses and the castle immediately clear. The Château dates from the Cathar period of the 11th and 12th centuries. Tours are offered of the fortified complex. The Galerie aux Images can be accessed from the castle courtyard; it displays restored medieval closure boards (closoirs) from the painted ceiling of the Maison du Viguier.

The Écomusée de la Vie d’Autrefois is housed in the former girls’ school, which served as the village school from 1871 to 1996. More than 3,500 objects are on display. You can explore on your own or take a guided tour. Before setting out, check current visiting arrangements for the museum and fortified complex, as these may change.

Hikes with different time commitments

The GR 787, also known as the Chemin de Fontcaude, passes through Puisserguier. Its red-and-white markings connect the Voie d’Arles with the Voie des Piémonts. The 66-kilometre route runs from Saint-Gervais-sur-Mare to Capestang and takes three days to complete.

A shorter, self-contained option is the Le Prieuré de Saint-Christophe hike: this circular route in Puisserguier is 11.5 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 4 hours and 30 minutes. It leads to a chapel set in a pine forest and offers views stretching from the Pyrenees to the coast. Its duration is therefore quite different from the three-day GR 787 hike. Route details may change, so check the current itinerary before setting out.

Wine and oil

At Domaine Pech de Saint-Paul, a vineyard tour titled “Vin et Garrigue – mariage heureux” explains how garrigue plants influence the wine produced there. Wine tastings are offered at the estate’s tasting room in Puisserguier. Arrangements for the vineyard tour and tastings may change; check before you travel.

Lo Moulinet focuses on something different: it showcases various oils made from traditional varieties of the Béziers region. A video shows how olive oil is made, and the still-operating press is used to produce oils. The two attractions offer different ways to discover regional produce: at the Domaine, the focus is on the influence of the garrigue on wine; at Lo Moulinet, it is on traditional oils and how they are made. Visiting arrangements may change; check the latest information before you travel.
