The Canal du Midi borders the village of Colombiers along its entire length. In 1996, UNESCO added the Canal du Midi to its World Heritage List. The waterway is thus a clear cultural landmark for Colombiers. Alongside the canal, an ancient route, historic buildings and activities at the port offer further reasons to plan a stay.
Canal, World Heritage and Via Domitia
The ancient Via Domitia crosses Colombiers from one end to the other, descending from Malpas and continuing to the port. This brings together two historical landmarks that are easy to distinguish: the Canal du Midi is recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO; the Via Domitia is notable for the route of an ancient road through the village. If you would like to explore Colombiers’ history, you can therefore follow either the waterway or the route from Malpas to the port. These are distinct geographical and historical points of interest.
Buildings and religious heritage
The former wine cellar of the Château de Colombiers was built at the end of the 19th century. The Church of Saint-Sylvestre – Sainte-Colombe can also be understood through specific historical details: the earliest recorded place of worship at the church dates from the early Christian period. The church also has a Visigothic altar, which is listed as a historic monument. These two details represent different aspects: the early place of worship and the altar’s special heritage status.
Visits and activities at the port
The Cave du Château can be visited during the Maison du Tourisme’s opening hours; visits are seasonal. Check the current opening hours before travelling if you plan to include this in your itinerary.
The Port de Colombiers is located on the grand bief of the Canal du Midi. You can hire boats there that do not require a licence to operate; this service may be seasonal. Excursion boats also depart from the port for trips on the Canal du Midi. These boats carry the Tourisme & Handicap label; trips may also be offered seasonally. By the water, you can choose between steering your own boat and taking an excursion. Check current dates and the availability of seasonal services before travelling.
The Voie Verte through Colombiers
The Saint-Chinian–Colombiers Canal du Midi Voie Verte comprises almost 33 kilometres of developed paths. It runs from Saint-Chinian to the Canal du Midi and passes through Colombiers. Its stated length and two endpoints provide a concrete measure for planning a longer route. Unlike the Via Domitia, which passes through the village, the Voie Verte is designated as a route almost 33 kilometres long. Conditions along the route may vary; check them before setting out.
