At 1,441 metres, Caro is the highest peak in the Els Ports massif, the Terres de l’Ebre and the province of Tarragona. You can reach it by vehicle or on foot via the signposted trail from the Esquirol car park. Choosing between driving and walking gives your visit a clear starting point; check road and trail conditions locally before setting out.

Roman Heritage and Fortresses

Tarraco was the first and oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula; the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco was added to the World Heritage List in 2000. Miravet offers a different historical perspective: its castle is a fortress with 25-metre-high walls, perched on a hill above the Ebro. Together, they offer two distinct historical perspectives: the history of a Roman settlement and a fortified complex overlooking the river.

Monasteries with a Long History

Santes Creus Monastery was founded in 1160 and remained the centre of one of the most extensive and influential monastic domains of the Crown of Aragon until 1835. It preserves two royal funerary monuments, important works of early Catalan Gothic art and the only royal tombs of the Crown of Aragon to have survived intact. Guided tours are available for individual visitors and the general public; check the schedule before travelling.

The Charterhouse of Escaladei lies at the bottom of a valley sheltered by the Montsant mountain range. It was the first charterhouse on the Iberian Peninsula and influenced the founding of many that followed. The restored area used for communal life is open to visitors. Guided tours are also available for individual visitors and the general public. Find out about dates and access arrangements in advance.

Cave Spaces and Modernist Architecture

The Coves de l’Espluga de Francolí extend for 3,590 metres of mapped passages beneath the centre of l’Espluga de Francolí. The caves contain a Palaeolithic sanctuary with more than 300 engravings dating back approximately 36,000 years. On the adventure route, two cave guides lead visitors to the large Sala de la Biela; protective equipment is included. Reservations and opening hours may change. Check the conditions when planning your visit.

The Celler Modernista de l’Espluga de Francolí is a Modernist cooperative winery built in 1913. Its distinctive features include brick arches with parabolic curves, as well as its architectural and historical significance. During a visit, you can explore the cellar and its main halls and learn how a bottling plant works. Check booking options for your visit.

Rice Fields and Wetlands in the Ebro Delta

The Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre covers 7,736 hectares in the Baix Ebre and Montsià comarques. Rice cultivation covers large areas of the delta and is part of its agricultural and culinary tradition. A visitor trail in the park leads to a viewing tower overlooking Buda Island, rice fields, salt marshes, ponds and lagoons, as well as the wetlands of L’Alfacada. Along this route, agricultural landscapes and different kinds of wetlands come together—a different focus from the region’s architectural and monastic history.
