Four preserved town gates, two arcaded squares and churches built in different periods give Santa Coloma de Queralt a distinct historical character. You can also visit the castle and tower and explore trails along the Gaià. During your stay, you can choose between architectural history, guided tours and hikes.
Old Town and Architectural History
The historic old town is designated a “Bien de Interés Cultural.” Four gates remain from the former fortifications; the arcaded squares Plaça Major and Plaça de l’Església are also part of this architectural heritage. The names of the squares and their arcades add two specific places to the picture of the former town fortifications.
The parish church of Santa Maria is built in the Gothic style. Its bell tower is 40 metres high and stands on an almost square base, 10 metres wide. Its structure is Gothic; the tower was completed in 1649 with a Baroque-style balustrade. Another art-historical highlight is the alabaster tomb of the Counts of Queralt, dating from 1370. Santa Maria de Bell-lloc, by contrast, shows an architectural transition from Romanesque to Gothic.
Castle, Culture and Tours
The rooms of Castell dels Comtes serve as the municipal cultural centre. On a tour of the castle and tower, visitors can climb an authentic watchtower and enjoy the view over the town. As the visitor programme may change, check before travelling whether the tour is offered on your chosen date.
The guided tour of the historic monuments begins in the courtyard of Castell dels Comtes, by the municipal tourist information office. The office is located in the castle’s arms courtyard. Guided tours of Cal Jaume Punto are scheduled for Sundays at 12:45 p.m.; check the date before your visit, as the schedule may change.
Trails along the Gaià
The Ruta dels Molins is a circular trail that follows the Gaià. Along the way are water-related features such as springs, washhouses, a weir and grain mills. The route thus connects the river with traces of how water was used and managed. Trail conditions and programme details may change; check the latest conditions before setting out on a hike.
The Camí de les Terres del Gaià starts at the Canelles springs in Santa Coloma de Queralt and runs for approximately 65 kilometres to Tamarit. The two routes call for different kinds of planning: the Ruta dels Molins is described as a circular trail, while the Camí’s approximate total distance to Tamarit indicates a longer hike. Take this distance into account when planning, but do not interpret it as a walking time or difficulty rating.
Industrial History and Local Festivals
La Farinera preserves its original machinery in its entirety. This industrial heritage adds another facet to the town’s history alongside its churches, squares and fortifications. At La Renaixença brewery, the visit includes an informative tour of the production facilities, explaining the manufacturing process from raw materials to finished product. Check whether this tour is available on your chosen date.
Among Santa Coloma de Queralt’s festivals and fairs is the Festa del Romesco, associated with a typical local dish. Together with the historic buildings and trails along the Gaià, this offers another way to plan your trip: you can focus on architecture and culture, or include local festival and food culture. If applicable, check event dates before planning your stay.
