Arbolí brings together Mediterranean pine forests, rock activities and a rich local history. Around three quarters of the municipality is covered by pine forest. When planning your stay, you can focus on what interests you: hiking, climbing, historic sites or the dates of local festivals.

Forest, Trails and Rock

The trails differ in the areas they pass through: the GR 7 long-distance trail runs through the municipality of Arbolí, while a PR hiking trail passes through the village. If you are comparing hiking options, this geographical distinction is a useful starting point. However, no walking time or route length is provided; do not base your plans on the trail designation alone.

Climbing is also a defining feature: Arbolí has numerous climbing routes and recognized bouldering sectors. Canyoning takes place in the Barranc del Gorguet. Those interested in an introductory course can also book an introductory climbing course with a rope in Arbolí, offered by Encordat. Check the booking details before making plans.

The Mirador de Arbolí is located on Cingle Blanc, on the road to La Mussara. On a clear day, the view extends to the Ebro Delta and the Balearic Islands. The viewpoint and trails offer different ways to plan a stay: you can focus on a hike or make the scenery and rock activities the main focus, without needing to combine them in any particular way.

Church, Chapel and Local History

The parish church of Sant Andreu dates from the late 18th century. It is neoclassical in style and has three naves, a choir and a bell tower. The church’s former rectory is now used as a mountain refuge. The church can thus be connected to the later use of its associated building as part of the area’s history.

The Ermita de Sant Pau lies above Arbolí and is said to have existed as early as the 13th century. It can be reached via a paved forest road. Another historical reference is the northern slope of Puig de Gallicant (1,008 m), above the Siurana River valley: a former settlement in the municipality was located there. In the 13th century, the area was an important center for the Cathars.

The municipality’s former industrial heritage is also part of its history. This includes four paper mills and a flour mill, now in ruins or abandoned. Another historical trace is the Castillejos military camp: established in the forests of Arbolí in 1950, it also extended into areas of La Febró and La Mussara and served the university militias. In summer, the camp accommodated 4,000 men.

Festivals and Local Offerings

The Festa de Sant Pau takes place on the Sunday after January 15. The festival includes a communal breakfast and a live performance. The Festa Major takes place on the first weekend of October and features two days of activities. If you want to plan your trip around either festival, check the dates and program in advance.

For a tasting, there is a shop in Arbolí run by Liana_Espai de territori. El Refugi combines a climbing interpretation center with a bar-restaurant and accommodation with bunk beds. Service details may change; check the details important to your visit in advance. Together with the mountain refuge in the former rectory, these are specific local accommodation options to consider when planning your trip.
