L’Aldea brings together a variety of discoveries: a restored railway line for cycling or walking, medieval watchtowers, and the Ermita de la Mare de Deu de l’Aldea, documented since the 12th century. There are also longer routes, a monumental tree and a weekly market. Visitors choosing the town for a stay can set their own priorities among culture, landscape and activity.

Via Verda and Cycling Routes

The L’Aldea–Lligallos section of the Via Verda del Delta de l’Ebre is 1,870 metres long. The former railway line has been restored and can be travelled by bicycle or on foot. Along this section are a monument made from an old railway carriage, the tourist office, the former station building and a motorhome parking area. The first section starts at the car park in Plaça 1 d’Octubre, next to the town hall; there are further access points at the tourist office and the motorhome parking area.

The Ruta 4 Torres offers a different scale: this cycling route is 29.37 kilometres long, passes the four towers of L’Aldea and takes about three hours. Its difficulty is considered moderate. This clearly distinguishes it from the 1,870-metre section of the Via Verda in terms of the stated distance and duration. It is worth checking the latest route information before setting out.

The Ruta olivera mil·lenària also combines activity with a specific destination. This moderately difficult walk leads to an ancient olive tree that was restored in 2019; the route can also be completed by mountain bike. Different ways of getting around are available: a short Via Verda section, a longer cycling tour to the towers and a walk to an old tree. Trail conditions may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.

Watchtowers and Cultural Heritage

The four medieval watchtowers of L’Aldea are listed by the Generalitat de Catalunya as Cultural Assets of National Interest. The Torre de la Candela offers a particularly clear example of their historic defensive role: this defensive and watchtower monitored the mouth of the Ebro and stands on the river’s left bank. The Torre de Burjassénia has a different form. It is a circular defensive tower within a farmstead and is around 14 to 16 metres high.

The Coetera de Ravanals is also part of the protected cultural heritage. It is protected as a Cultural Asset of National Interest in the category of Sites of Ethnological Interest. At the Torre Benixarop, meanwhile, the ruins and their setting take centre stage: they lie in the northern drylands of L’Aldea and offer panoramic views of the Ebro Delta. The towers and the Coetera thus offer different ways to explore local history, from defensive architecture to a cultural asset protected for its ethnological significance.

Hermitage, Tree and Weekly Market

The Ermita de la Mare de Deu de l’Aldea has been documented since the 12th century. Among its notable works of art is a 40 m² altarpiece by Joan Rebull, described as one of the largest paintings in the Terres de l’Ebre. Those interested in sacred art will find here a clearly identified work and its regional context, alongside the building’s long history.

Another natural monument is the Eucaliptus Alt de Bernis. The Generalitat de Catalunya has listed it as a monumental tree; it is 32 metres tall. Alongside the ancient olive tree on the Ruta olivera mil·lenària, it adds a natural highlight to the historic buildings. The two trees are quite different: one is designated a monumental tree, while the other is the destination of a walking route that can also be reached by mountain bike.

For a different glimpse of everyday life, the Mercat Setmanal takes place every Wednesday on Carrer Lluís Braille, in the Plaça Estació area. Clothing and food are on offer. As well as routes and historic sights, there is a regular market day to include in your plans. In L’Aldea, culture, nature and activity can therefore be balanced according to different interests, without letting any one route define the visit.
