Alcover combines a historic town centre with cultural sites and trails in the surroundings of the Muntanyes de Prades. Museu d'Alcover is housed in the historic Ca Batistó building, at the foot of the mountains and between Tarragona, Reus and Valls. When planning your visit, consider which themes you want to shape your stay: exhibitions and architecture, recurring festivals, or trails with different highlights.

Museum, architecture and churches

Two exhibitions at Museu d'Alcover offer different perspectives. “Ca Batistó, modernitat burgesa” uses the building’s grand rooms to explore bourgeois thinking and the transition to a new society. “Triàsic, explosió de vida” interprets fossil remains and presents life and the landscape of the Muntanyes de Prades when they were still shaped by a prehistoric sea. The “Triàsic en família” experience is available year-round by prior reservation.

Beyond the museum, you can discover buildings from different periods and in a variety of styles. The Convent de Santa Anna is classified as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional, a protected cultural asset of national interest. The Església Nova, also known as the Nostra Senyora de l’Assumpció church, was built between 1578 and 1630. The Romanesque Església Vella dates from the late 12th century; it is also known as the Església de la Sang and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1931. The Església de Sant Miquel is considered Alcover’s first church: it was already in existence in 1154 and became a parish church in 1166.

Another architectural highlight is Ca Lluís Domingo at Plaça del Portal 2. The work of Cèsar Martinell i Brunet combines functional architecture with Modernist elements. The house is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The fountains also offer a tangible way to compare different periods: Font Vella is Alcover’s oldest fountain, with medieval origins, while Font de la Plaça Nova was built in 1894. Water from Font del Lleó was used to fill the washhouse or for irrigation.

Trails and landscape

For a signposted circular route with clearly defined details, take the Camí del Rourell, also known as the Camí dels Quints: this nature trail is approximately four kilometres long and is an easy circular route. The Ruta del Glorieta offers trails of varying difficulty and connects mills, irrigation channels, springs and water intakes. The Ruta del Glorieta is considered part of the local historical and cultural heritage.

The Vall del Glorieta is part of a cultural and natural landscape in the surroundings of the Muntanyes de Prades. MiMo is located there, in a restored former drying building belonging to a paper mill. Another structure on the Glorieta River is the Pont dels Moros, also known as the Pont del Molinet: this old architectural landmark has a single arch. The Mare de Déu del Remei sanctuary offers a different historical perspective with its Baroque design; it was built in the second half of the 18th century.

The route from Alcover to Mont-ral starts at the municipal estate of Mas de Forès. It has recreational facilities, including a supervised, paid car park and picnic tables.

Annual festivals

Alcover has several recurring events held at specific locations. Every year on 26 December, children gather at Plaça Nova to celebrate the Tió més llarg del món. Two other festivals take place on different weekends in October: the Fira de Bandolers is held on the second weekend of October, and the Festa Major on the third. The fair was established in 2002 to revive the traditional Fira del Remei. The Festa Major includes numerous popular and traditional cultural events, as well as other performances and activities.

The Viacrucis al Calvari also takes place at a specific time and location: it is held on Good Friday at 8 a.m. and goes from the Nostra Senyora de l’Assumpció church to Capelleta hill. If you are planning your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates in advance.
