Vilanova D'escornalbou offers a range of options for a short break: an agricultural landscape, hiking trails, a cultural route and historic buildings. When planning your visit, it is helpful to consider whether you would rather spend more time outdoors on a hike or exploring local crafts and history.
Landscape and hiking
Olive, almond and carob trees are the main features of the landscape around Vilanova D'escornalbou. Traditional dry-stone walls are also part of this agricultural landscape. The municipal hiking trail crosses the quarry area in the western half of the municipality. This route takes you through a distinctive part of the local landscape. Regionally, pine forests shape the landscape below Escornalbou, along with a small stand of cork oak trees.
Another option is the Ruta de Vilanova d'Escornalbou a les ermites. This easy route is about 5.6 kilometres long and takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. It is suitable for families with children and can also be ridden by mountain bike. Its approximate duration and length help you fit the route into your day. The classification as an easy route and the estimated duration answer two different questions: how challenging it is and how much time it takes.
Local crafts and history
The Cooperativa houses an extensive exhibition of local crafts. The exhibits include paintings, ceramics, bobbin lace, crochet and natural soaps. Vilanova's cultural route includes nine stops close to one another, offering a distinct cultural focus alongside the hiking trails.
The parish church of Sant Joan dates from the late 16th or early 17th century. Its façade and bell tower show fortification work from the wars of the 19th century. The date of construction and the later traces of fortification give the church different historical associations, visible in specific parts of the building.
The west side of the Corredor de la Vila also retains the same layout as it had in the 17th century. Cal PeirĂ is a building from the late 17th century, and the year 1699 is inscribed on its door. The building also includes a defensive tower about 10 metres high, with a machicolation. These buildings offer different points of interest if you are interested not only in the landscape but also in historic structures and architectural details.
