The Ball del Sant Crist presents a local legend in the theatrical form of a spoken dance drama. This kind of performance can probably be traced back to the first half of the 18th century.
Cultural History in Legends and Architectural Forms
The Cova del Vergerars, also known as Cova Fonda, contains finds made of stone, bone, metal and ceramic, dating from the third and second millennia BC. The collection therefore includes materials from several fields and offers another archaeological point of reference.
The original portal, windows and some ornamental elements of the entrance façade have been preserved from the Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Salomó. A Romanesque relief depicts a castle flanked by lances, as well as two Maltese crosses, each inscribed within a circle.
The bell tower of Santa Maria is a slender, polygonal Baroque structure with two storeys. The Chapel of Sant Crist, in turn, has a Greek-cross floor plan and a hemispherical dome with a drum and lantern. Here you can encounter different forms of religious architecture, from the Romanesque relief to the Baroque tower.
A guided heritage tour includes the Chapel of Sant Crist and Casa Pairal de Cal Cadernal. The chapel’s artistic and sculptural richness is explained during the visit; confirm the arrangements before you travel.
Cal Cadernal is a Renaissance building on Carrer de Josep Nin. Its square tower, documented since the 17th century, has a hipped roof. The building belonged to the Nin family, a family of knights that held considerable influence and power in the 17th century.
Another historical landmark is Salomó’s town hall and former school building. It was built according to a design drawn up by Cèsar Martinell in 1924; the construction differed from the original design, and the building was inaugurated in 1926.
River Landscapes and Trails
In the Salomó area, the Gaià forms spectacular meanders between forests and mountains. The river, forest and mountain landscapes support a wide variety of plant communities and animal species. Salomó’s paths and trails are particularly recommended for hikers.
One named route is the Ruta Saludable. It starts in Salomó, follows a figure-eight loop through the municipal area and is approximately four kilometres long. Its loop shape and approximate length give you two specific reference points when planning trails into your trip.
Plan Your Journey
From inland, you can reach Salomó via the C-51 or AP-2; from the coast, the N-340 or AP-7 lead there. Check route conditions before setting out. Salomó also has a railway station and bus services. Check current timetables separately before planning your arrival.
