A tree more than 400 years old, almond blossom in spring and architectural history spanning several centuries give La Palma D'ebre a range of reasons to visit. The Pi de la Palma brings the natural heritage into focus; culture enthusiasts can also explore the parish church, a historic prison and the Holy Week tradition. The season and your personal interests can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Pi de la Palma and Almond Blossom

The Pi de la Palma, also known as the Pi del Pino, stands around 300 metres from the town on a ridge running northwards. The tree is more than 400 years old and was recognised as a monumental tree by the Government of Catalonia on 1 April 1991. Its trunk circumference is between 5.15 and 7.75 metres; it is described as the tree with the thickest trunk in Catalonia. Its age, circumference and official recognition highlight different aspects of this natural monument.

Spring is a special time to visit for the almond blossom: La Palma D'ebre is associated with the flowering of its almond trees. A seasonal visitor experience combines a walk among blossoming almond trees with vermouth tasting and an aperitif. As this programme is seasonal, check the dates before your trip.

Architectural History and Local Tradition

The present-day parish church, Església Parroquial de l'Assumpció, was built in the Renaissance style from 1802 and inaugurated in 1823. A much older layer of the built heritage can be found beneath the lower floors of Casa de la Vila: there is a former 15th-century prison, with thick stone walls and a pointed barrel vault. The dates place two distinctly different periods of architectural history side by side.

Local tradition also includes the participation of the Grup d’Armats in Holy Week processions and services. If you want to time your trip to coincide with Holy Week, check the specific dates in advance. A guided tour of the old town is also listed as a cultural activity; check for current dates.

Hiking and Walks

Hiking and walks are among the sporting and cultural activities in La Palma D'ebre. A route description dated 30 September 2010 gives the distance of a signposted family hike in the surrounding area as 6.64 kilometres, with 165 metres of ascent and descent, and a duration of 1 hour and 40 minutes. As the description dates from 2010, check the current route and signposting before setting out.

At one point along a hiking route, you can see the troglodytic houses known as “Cueva del porreranos”, built into caves. This architectural feature adds another specific discovery along the way, complementing the church architecture and the Pi de la Palma.
