Glassblowing, forest trails and local festivals give a stay in Vimbodí a range of different themes. The history of glassmaking dates back to the Middle Ages and can be explored at the Museu del Vidre through visits and workshops. Those more interested in the landscape will find plenty to explore on the hiking trails and at Tossal de la Baltasana. Local traditions and truffle-related offerings are also part of what makes the town distinctive.

Glassmaking History and Craftsmanship

Glassmaking in Vimbodí dates back to the Middle Ages, specifically the 12th century. The first documented glass furnace in the municipality of Vimbodí i Poblet, dated 1188, belonged to the glassmaker Guillem. At the beginning of the 20th century, glass production became Vimbodí’s most important industry, and several glass furnaces were established in the town. The dates highlight two significant chapters: the medieval beginnings and the importance of glass as an industry at the start of the 20th century.

The Museu del Vidre offers family visits and workshops where visitors can learn about and experience the craft of glassblowing. The Sarga workshops bring together several elements: materials and guidance from a craftswoman, museum admission with a glassblowing demonstration, and access to the collection. Participants then take home the piece they made themselves. This makes the experience different from simply learning about the history of the craft: creating something yourself is an explicit part of the offering.

Hiking Trails with Different Destinations

The hiking trails showcase different aspects of the landscape. The therapeutic forest trail starts and ends at Casa Forestal de Castellfollit, in the municipality of Vimbodí i Poblet. A third hiking trail reaches Tossal de la Baltasana. At 1,201 metres, it is the highest point in the Prades Mountains; the trail passes through a sessile oak forest considered unique in Catalonia.

The La Pena hiking trail leads to a viewpoint above the La Pena gorge. From there, the panorama stretches across slopes dominated by holm oak forests. The route also includes an ice house, a historical relic. The destinations described therefore cater to different interests: a forest trail, a route through a distinctive sessile oak forest, and a trail combining views with evidence of past use.

Water, Local History and Local Offerings

At Fonts del Gorg, a natural underground watercourse feeds springs that gush from several limestone caves. Stone wash basins built into the rock have also been preserved there; in the past, the village women used them to wash clothes. The area also serves as a venue for folk dances during the patron saint’s festival, outdoor social evenings, family activities and other celebrations organised by the municipality.

The company Tòfona de la Conca offers another way to explore the local area. Its activities include searching for truffles with dogs, pairing truffles with other foods, and other family-friendly options. This adds a local culinary dimension to the craft-focused side of a stay, without limiting the experience to a single offering.

Festivals and Distinctive Details in the Town

VITRUM has been held every year since 2014 on a weekend in October in Vimbodí i Poblet. The Festes Quinquennals de la Mare de Déu dels Torrents follow a different schedule: they have been celebrated without interruption every five years since 1944. During the welcoming procession, the image of the Mare de Déu dels Torrents is carried from the hermitage to the parish church in town; the walk is two kilometres long. If you would like to plan your trip around either of these festivals, check the dates before making your plans.

Individual architectural and local details also stand out. The façade of Sant Salvador Church features a vertical declining sundial bearing the year 1591. Carrer de les Abraçades is 94 centimetres wide and is considered one of the narrowest streets in Catalonia. In the Església de la Transfiguració del Senyor, the altar of the Mare de Déu de Montserrat was designed by the Modernist architect Josep M. Jujol.

Plan around the things you actually want to experience, rather than assuming the different offerings form a set itinerary.
