A 25-metre-high wall surrounds Castell de Miravet on its hill; from there, the fortress dominates the course of the Ebro and the surrounding countryside. The river and terrain are also part of the historic centre: houses rise above the river and along mountains and rocky cliffs, alongside distinctive arcaded streets and old houses. The castle, historic centre and landscape offer different ways to experience Miravet—from medieval history to paths along the river.
Castle, historic centre and history
The Templars made Castell de Miravet the seat of their province of Catalonia and Aragon. Those interested in this history will find other historical points of interest in the town: a Renaissance temple was built by the Order of the Hospital in the 16th and 17th centuries over a former mosque used by the Muslim population. Guided tours of Cap de la Vila are available; check the dates in advance.
The Centre d’Art Joaquim Mir is located in the Palau de Miravet and honours the Catalan Impressionist painter with an exhibition space. The gallery displays nine true-to-scale reproductions of his paintings. Visits for small groups are available by appointment. If you are planning a visit, arrange your appointment in advance.
Hiking trails, river and climbing
There are different types of routes to choose from for a hike. The GR 99 section from Miravet to Benifallet is twelve kilometres long, passes through Cap de la Vila and follows paths close to the river before joining the Via Verda. The mountain trails of La Cameta Coixa, by contrast, comprise three circular routes starting from Miravet. You can start at the end of the historic centre by Cap de Vila or at the castle car park. Check current trail information before setting out.
The Ebro is also part of the experience on the water: the kayak section from Miravet to Benifallet offers views of Miravet’s hanging houses and the landscape of Pas de Barrufemes. Before booking, check water conditions and provider availability. The Miravet weir, known as Molinot, can also be reached from the river by boat or kayak. The structure preserves the remains of medieval locks.
Those interested in climbing will find a sector at the foot of the castle by the Ebro with around 30 sport climbing routes. Morral de la Covalta is a steep limestone cliff above the Ebro associated with traditional climbing. The difference lies in the type of climbing: there is a sport climbing sector at the foot of the castle, while Morral de la Covalta, above the Ebro, is a steep limestone cliff associated with traditional climbing.
Near Miravet, the Ebro winds through the Serra de Cardó and Pas de Barrufemes. This unspoilt, rocky and wooded stretch marks the boundary between Ribera d’Ebre and Baix Ebre. The river landscape and mountain ranges are therefore as much a part of the town’s character as its buildings.
Ceramics and regional specialities
Seven pottery workshops are active in the Raval dels Canteres neighbourhood. The workshops root the pottery tradition in the townscape; check their individual opening hours before visiting. Miravet’s food is also part of the Terres de l’Ebre: pastissets are a traditional pastry of Islamic origin, traditionally made with angel hair jam.
Les Àrgoles in Miravet produces and sells extra virgin olive oil, including Arbequina and Picual varieties. As sales offers may change, check the current sales terms. On the road from Miravet towards Benissanet, at kilometre 2, there is a winery that produces and bottles wines and wine products rooted in a family tradition. Visits as part of the DO Tarragona wine route are available by prior reservation.
Getting there and finding your way
Miravet has no direct public transport connection; travelling by private vehicle is recommended. As driving through the town centre is difficult, the local recommendation is to park at the landing stage and continue by boat. The Pas de Barca de Miravet is a traditional ferry: a platform on two original llaguts crosses the Ebro using the river current, on foot or by vehicle. Before travelling, check current transport connections and local information about access, parking and the ferry.
