Conesa’s medieval town centre follows a circular settlement pattern along the contours, with the castle at the highest point. A defensive wall with two gateways encloses medieval Conesa. In 2011, the Generalitat de Catalunya declared the historic town centre a Cultural Asset of National Interest (Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional). For travellers interested in local history, the focus is not just a single building: the layout and its relationship to the castle’s elevation are also part of the story.
Churches, a gateway, and architectural history
The Church of Santa Maria in Conesa is a Gothic building dating from 1335 to 1347. The Portal de Santa Maria dates from the 14th century and was built into the town wall between the towers of del GomĂ and del Ferrer; the del Ferrer tower was demolished. Here, Gothic church architecture meets a gateway with a clear connection to the fortifications. Sant Pere belongs to an earlier period: the church is a Romanesque building from the late 12th century, stands on a small hill, and was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1977.
Smaller historic sites also add to the picture. The former communal bread oven, Forn de Pa – Ajuntament, was in operation until 1924 and now houses a small museum with everyday tools from the last century. The Ermita de Sant Antoni was built as a church and apparently served as a hospital during outbreaks of infectious diseases; it is already mentioned in a document from 1297.
Hiking and landscape
The municipality of Conesa has several routes for hiking and mountain biking. The Camà d’hivern de Conesa passes through wooded areas and farmland to the remains of the former settlement of Torlanda. This offers two perspectives for planning a visit: several routes for exploring the municipality on foot or by bike, and the Camà d’hivern, with its historic destination and changing scenery. Conesa lies between two streams whose waters flow towards the Vall del Corb. The area around Conesa has forests of pine, oak, beech, and maple; next to the town lies the natural area Espai Natural de les Obagues del Riu Corb (EPN).
Events throughout the year
Conesa’s annual festival calendar includes a communal Cassola de tros meal in April. The Mercat Vell de Conesa is scheduled for the first Saturday in August; a mountain race and a popular hike are scheduled for the last Sunday in September. Events are therefore spread across several months: the April meal is followed by the August market and the running and hiking events in September. Exact event dates may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the festival calendar for the relevant year.
