Ginestar lies on the left bank of the Ebro, in the southern part of Ribera d’Ebre. Historic architecture, a riverside footpath, and experiences centred on wine and Clotxa give a stay a range of different focal points. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between them: a church tells a story of alterations and design, the riverside promenade offers a specific route, and wine experiences may require booking and, in some cases, are subject to seasonal availability. This can help you decide whether architectural history, time by the water or local food should take priority for you.
Architecture and Festival Traditions
The Ermita de Sant Isidre was built in the 16th century. The Diada de l’Ermita includes a communal lunch at the hermitage. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the date in advance.
Another notable building is the Església Vella de Ginestar, a distinctive historic structure. Later alterations have brought together three architectural styles. Inside the church is a white alabaster cross of Saint John, set into the jasper frame of the sacristy door. The building invites you to look at both its overall design and a single detail on the door to the sacristy. Both offer different points of interest for a walk focused on architecture.
Archaeological Traces and History
The Poblat ibèric del Barranc de Gà fols, also known as “El Pomeralet,” is a 600-square-metre archaeological site dating from the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. Excavated structures have been dated to the 6th century BC. The dating of the structures is therefore more specific than the broader period to which the site is assigned.
A different historical period is represented by the former ferry crossing between Ginestar and Benissanet. During the first phase of fighting in the Battle of the Ebro, which coincided with the Republican offensive from 25 to 31 July 1938, a wooden bridge for heavy loads was built there. Remains of a trench have also been preserved at the site. The prehistoric periods represented at the Poblat and its specific connection to 1938 offer distinctly different ways of exploring history.
Walking by the Ebro
The Passeig de l’embarcador is a pedestrian promenade along the river, between Ginestar’s former football pitch and the nearby landing stage on the Ebro. Benches and exercise equipment are located along the path. The Embarcador de Ginestar can be reached via the Passeig del Riu and has a lookout point and a picnic area. For clarity, the promenade is a walking route, while the lookout point and picnic area are facilities at the Embarcador. Check the condition of the facilities before your visit.
Wine and Local Produce
Vins i Olis Suñer offers a cellar visit with wine tasting, as well as a workshop on preparing Clotxa. These two experiences are intended to be available year-round; check current booking availability before your trip. Guided experiences in the vineyards and cellar, along with wine tastings, are also offered. For these experiences, check both booking availability and seasonal availability in advance.
The activities have different focuses: the workshop centres on preparing Clotxa, while the guided experiences and tastings are about wine. Local produce includes oil, wine, craft beer, stone fruit and handmade fine pastries. The culinary selection therefore extends beyond wine; individual producers and availability may change.
