When looking for accommodation in Pira, it helps to consider the village’s different highlights: local history, paths across the plains and two festivals held at different times of the year. At Tossal de la Bala, the mountain next to Pira, there is a camping area with a water supply, showers, toilets, parking and a municipal swimming pool. If you include these municipal facilities in your accommodation plans, check in advance which services are currently available; facilities and services may change.

Pira between hills and waterways

Pira lies on a small hill surrounded by the Torrentill stream. Other features in the surrounding area include a natural pool on the Anguera, a tributary of the Francolí. Thus, a stream and a river pool are among the different water features of the local landscape.

Houses, architecture and history

Several manor houses from the 18th century have been preserved in the historic centre, including Cal Celdoni, Cal Batllevell and Cal Poblet. Another architectural highlight is the Celler del Sindicat Agrícola, a modernist building by the architect Cèsar Martinell. The winery of the Cooperativa Agrícola de Pira was inaugurated in 1919. The 18th-century manor houses thus stand alongside a modernist building, while the winery offers another historical reference through its 1919 inauguration. These three points highlight different aspects: the dates of the houses, the style and architect of the Celler, and the specific year the winery was inaugurated.

Paths to the gypsum quarries

The Route de les pedreres de Pira is suitable for families and is signposted. It crosses the plains of Pira to former gypsum quarries and kilns. Some of these quarries and kilns remained very active until the end of the 20th century. The route also passes through a landscape of high ecological value, linking the history of gypsum extraction with the surrounding landscape.

The Camí de la Senyera offers a different perspective: you can discover some of Pira’s most representative gypsum quarries along the way, and the route also offers views of the Conca de Barberà. The routes have different highlights: the Route de les pedreres leads to former quarries and kilns on the plains, while the Camí de la Senyera connects the quarries with views of the Conca. Conditions on both routes may change, so check them before setting out.

Two festival periods throughout the year

The festivals also offer different dates to plan around. Pira’s Festa Major is celebrated for Sant Salvador in August. The smaller Festa Major Petita takes place for Sant Sebastià in May. If you would like to plan your stay around either occasion, choose between the August date of the Festa Major and the May date of the smaller Festa Major Petita. Check the specific event dates before travelling.
