Benissanet offers several points of interest for a trip focused on culture and hiking: a literary route through its streets, historic buildings and traces of the past along the Ebro. Stage 39 of the Camino Natural del Ebro also passes through the town: the Camí de les Sènies leads to Benissanet’s fertile orchards, then continues along the T-324 towards Miravet. In July, the Fira de l’Auberge adds a seasonal highlight centred on the peaches grown here. You can plan your stay around literature, architectural history, hiking or the festival calendar.

Literary Route through Benissanet

The Ruta literària Artur Bladé i Desumvila is a cultural route through the streets of Benissanet. Texts from the writer’s works lead to notable places in his hometown, connecting literature with specific locations. If you want to discover the town through literature and history, the route offers a distinct perspective alongside its buildings and historic sites.

Church, Tower and Historic Traces

The Torre de Cervelló is an old watchtower and defensive tower in the Salvaterres area, at the foot of the Serra de la Vall de la Torre. Just over half of the tower remains. This includes, in particular, two crenellated walls on the north and west sides, as well as part of the east wall. These surviving sections give a tangible impression of the historic building’s form, although the tower is not fully preserved.

The church of Sant Joan Baptista stands in the centre of Benissanet. It was built after the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939, following the destruction of the earlier church in 1938. Its construction therefore began after a clearly defined turning point. West of Benissanet is the Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Pilar, formerly dedicated to Saint Barbara. The two religious buildings offer different points of reference: the church in the town centre and the Santuari to the west of the town.

The remains of a Moorish wall stand by the Ebro; Benissanet also has a landing place on the river. The La Font Gran air-raid shelter represents another layer of history: it was built following the Battle of the Ebro because of the constant bombing of nearby crossing points and, at times, the town itself. The wall remains and the shelter thus point to different chapters in Benissanet’s history.

Hiking Stage 39

For hikers, Stage 39 of the Camino Natural del Ebro is a practical point of reference. Along the Camí de les Sènies, it runs from Móra d’Ebre to Benissanet’s fertile orchards. From Benissanet, the stage continues along the T-324 towards Miravet. You can therefore include the town in your travel plans as the destination of the route from Móra d’Ebre or as a starting point for continuing towards Miravet.

Peaches and the July Festival

Held every July, the Fira de l’Auberge showcases more than fifty varieties of peaches grown in Benissanet and features cultural and festive activities. It adds a local farming connection to the town’s historical and literary themes. If you want to plan your stay around the Fira, check the exact dates and programme in advance: both may change.
