A rail connection, coastal paths and a range of historic routes give l’Ametlla de Mar several possible focuses for a stay. The town is connected to the RENFE Barcelona–Valencia railway line. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you would like to focus on cultural history, maritime experiences or the landscape.

Cultural history on routes and at places of interest

The Sant Jordi d’Alfama military fort dates from the first half of the 18th century and was built to defend the coast against piracy. The Order of San Jorge was founded in 1201 and was associated with the construction of a fortress. These two historical connections relate to different periods. An archaeological perspective is offered by a route through the area of Sant Jordi beach and its immediate surroundings. It includes a section of the Via Augusta and the Rivellets Bridge.

The historic route of l’Ametlla de Mar has nine stops. Its themes range from the town’s founding by fishermen from Grau de Valencia to religious traditions and 18th-century bandit legends, as well as shipwrecks off the coast during the First World War. You can walk the route independently or with a tourist guide. The Museo de Cerámica Popular is another place of interest you can visit. Cultural discoveries therefore include a ceramics museum, archaeological sites and a route covering several historical themes.

Coastal paths and natural features

The GR-92 from l’Ametlla de Mar to l’Almadrava is a moderately difficult coastal path. Highlights described along the route include views of the Mediterranean, hidden coves, pine trees and coastal cliffs. The moderate difficulty rating is a practical point to consider when planning a hike and assessing it against your plans.

The habitats on land and at sea also shape the town’s connection with nature: its terrestrial and marine ecosystems are in good condition, with Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows and high biological diversity. Among the notable natural features of the terrestrial coast are coastal lagoons along the ramblas. The landscape therefore encompasses both coastal paths and a variety of natural habitats.

Maritime experiences and the seabed

The Tuna Tour combines information about bluefin tuna, fishing, nutrition, research, biology and the gastronomic value of bluefin tuna with the experience of swimming among hundreds of them. Depending on the season and departure schedule, it runs from Easter until the end of October. Check the departure schedule for your specific travel dates.

Another maritime route is the Ruta submarina. It passes through three types of seabed: rocky seabed, sandy seabed and Posidonia beds. This brings together two distinct themes: bluefin tuna is the focus of the Tuna Tour, while the underwater route covers different areas of the seabed.

Fideudada and fisherman’s noodles

Fideudada is one of l’Ametlla de Mar’s maritime dishes. The Diada dels Fideus Rossejats at the port is a special culinary event. There, amateur cooks demonstrate different ways of preparing this traditional fisherman’s noodle dish, which is then served for tasting. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the event dates.
