Riudoms brings together historical connections to Gaudí, an underground cistern, an August festival and a regional olive oil route. These offer different ways to plan your trip: family history, culture and architecture, a seasonal festival date or cycling through the Baix Camp countryside.

Gaudí’s family history

Antoni Gaudí was born on 25 June 1852 at Mas de la Calderera. The estate had belonged to his family since the 18th century. The Casa Pairal d’Antoni Gaudí has its own history of ownership: since the 18th century, it first belonged to Gaudí’s grandparents, then to his father and finally to Antoni Gaudí.

Another family story concerns Casa Gaudí, where there was a metalworking workshop. Gaudí’s paternal grandfather used it first, followed by his father. His birthplace, the succession of ownership and the workshop’s use offer different biographical perspectives on Gaudí’s family background.

Cisterna Vella and architectural history

The Cisterna Vella is an underground space containing a large water cistern dating from the 18th century. Underground galleries were dug there during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), and the cistern served as the central space of an air-raid shelter. The site thus brings together an older structure and its use during the war years.

The Cisterna Vella can be visited as part of a guided tour; groups can make a reservation. The architect Pere Blai contributed to the construction of the Església Parroquial de Sant Jaume Apòstol.

Fira de l’Avellana

The Fira de l’Avellana takes place on the second weekend of August. It gives trips centred on the festival a clear seasonal date; if you plan to visit that weekend, check the programme for the relevant edition. The programme for the 2026 Fira once again scheduled the Gastrofira in the courtyard of Escola Beat, the main event area.

Olive oil route and getting there

Riudoms is one of seven olive oil-producing towns along the Ruta Cicloturística de l’Oli. The route is a loop that follows flat paths suitable for cyclists of all kinds. Along the way, visitors can explore cooperatives, mills, museums and interpretation centres devoted to olive oil. The landscape includes olive groves, vegetable-growing fields, hazelnut groves and carob trees typical of the Baix Camp.

The Ruta Gaudí Riudoms is a waymarked walking route to the Riera de Maspujols and Mas de la Calderera. When choosing between the routes, both the mode of travel and the theme matter: a walking route to two named destinations or a cycling loop through olive oil-producing towns.

To continue to Riudoms, the recommended route is via Reus, changing to a bus there. Buses from Reus to Riudoms run regularly, approximately once an hour. Check the timetable before departure and plan your connection in Reus around your arrival time.
