Palm fibres give Mas de Barberans a distinct cultural focus: the Museu de la Pauma places their use at the heart of its work as part of the local ethnological heritage. Also of interest are the CocĂł de la Gralla rock art site in the Parc Natural dels Ports and the La Vall landscape, with its signposted trails. The events programme also offers its own highlights, from plant-fibre crafts to music and open-air cinema. This gives you several specific options when planning your trip: crafts and cultural heritage, nature trails or an event date.
Palm fibres as a cultural theme
The CDR Museu de la Pauma opened in May 2010 as a space supporting initiatives to promote and diversify local and regional economic development. At the same time, it showcases part of the local ethnological heritage: working with palm fibres. Pauma is therefore not just a material, but also part of local cultural history.
The Museu de la Pauma offers an annual programme of workshops using plant fibres. Guided tours and individually arranged workshops can be booked by email at info@cdrmuseudelapauma.cat or by phone on 977053778. The annual programme and individually arranged sessions offer different ways to explore plant-fibre work. If you are planning a guided tour or an individual workshop, arrange the date directly with the museum.
Rock art and trails in La Vall
The CocĂł de la Gralla rock art site is located in Mas de Barberans, in the Parc Natural dels Ports, and is an example of Levantine rock art. Alongside palm-fibre work, this brings an archaeological theme into the natural park. The two cultural experiences are clearly distinct: one centres on a rock art site, the other on part of the local ethnological heritage.
There are three signposted trails in the La Vall area: RincĂłn de la cueva de Marc, la Airosa and el Mas de BarrĂł. Striking rock faces stand out, while the landscape is characterised by pine, holm oak and beech forests. For a nature-focused visit, the named routes and distinctive landscape features are the main attractions. This is a different focus from exploring rock art or plant fibres.
Plant fibres, festivals and cultural events
The Fira Monogrà fica de les Fibres Vegetals showcases plant-fibre work in traditional, artistic and design-oriented forms. The 23è Racó dels Artesans programme includes craft demonstrations, plant-fibre workshops for children and adults, guided tours, competitions and exhibitions, as well as outdoor music and food activities. While the Fira focuses on these three forms of plant-fibre work, the Racó programme includes additional activities and demonstrations.
The Quinzena Cultural offers a varied programme, including excursions, concerts, dance, open-air cinema and theatre, as well as jazz, rock and Havaneres concerts. It also features a tropical festival, Nit de la Paella, workshops and conferences, a children’s park, bowling competitions, stargazing and a futsal championship. Compared with the events focused on plant fibres, this programme ranges from stage and music events to sport and stargazing.
The Sant Antoni celebration brings together dance, fire, percussion and folk singing in a street-theatre aesthetic. Another event is the Cursa de l’Airosa, Memorial Felip Adell: it began in 2015 and is normally held on the second Saturday in August. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the details for the relevant year.
Olive oil as a regional feature
The geographical production area of the Oli del Baix Ebre-MontsiĂ protected designation of origin includes Mas de Barberans. This adds a specific connection to olive oil to the themes of culture and landscape: the town lies within the demarcated production area of this protected designation of origin.
