Margalef lies in the valley of the Montsant River, in the north of the Priorat region and within the Parc Natural de la Serra de Montsant. Its landscape of gorges, rock faces and striking rock formations sits alongside a historic town center and opportunities for hiking, climbing and caving. This allows visitors to tailor their stay to different interests, without having to explore nature and culture in the same way.

Rocky Landscapes and Notable Places

The rock faces and formations around Margalef are part of its landscape. The Embassament de Margalef reservoir is also set in picturesque surroundings, surrounded by cliffs and mountains. For a viewpoint, Racó dels Pèlics offers a natural vantage point with sweeping views of the Montsant massif. These places offer different perspectives: the reservoir framed by mountains and cliffs, and the viewpoint looking out toward the massif.

The Ermita de Sant Salvador is 3.5 kilometers from the town, within the natural park. There is a spring with fresh water and a picnic area there. The Barranc de Sant Salvador ravine is also home to Cova d’en Ximet, a restored natural space designed as a rest area integrated into the landscape. Cova del Teix, in turn, is an access point to one of the most notable routes in the Parc Natural de la Serra de Montsant. These places can therefore be included in your plans in different ways: as a viewpoint, as a hermitage with a picnic area, or in connection with a trail.

Trails, Caves and Climbing

Margalef has an extensive network of traditional paths and marked hiking trails. Those wishing to combine a hike with a cave visit can extend Itinerari 3: Margalef with a visit to Cova de la Taverna. A headlamp or flashlight and a helmet are required; allow at least one hour for the cave. Check the current access requirements before visiting. This makes it possible to distinguish this option from a hike without a cave visit and to allow for the time needed in the cave.

Cova de la Taverna is one of the municipality’s best-known caves and is especially popular with those starting out in caving. Climbing is another possible activity: routes range from beginner grades to a high level of difficulty. Those weighing up different activities can consider this specific caving option and the wide range of climbing routes alongside the trail network. The requirements for a headlamp or flashlight, a helmet and the minimum time apply specifically to a visit to Cova de la Taverna.

Townscape and History

The historic center is home to the Església de Sant Miquel, a Neoclassical parish church built in the 18th century. Carrer de les Covetes offers another perspective on the town’s architectural history: natural rock is integrated into its façades and traditional urban layout. This very connection between rock and townscape makes the street a distinctive part of the historic center.

Beyond the townscape, visitors can explore evidence of earlier human presence: Abric del Filador is an important archaeological site in the Parc Natural de la Serra de Montsant. The remains attest to human presence in the region since prehistoric times; the site is of archaeological and heritage interest. The town is also home to the Centro de InterpretaciĂłn del Aceite y de las EconomĂas Productivas de la Sierra de Montsant. It also serves as an information center for the natural park, linking the topic of the local productive economy with information about the protected area.

Planning and Local Traditions

From Falset, Margalef can be reached by road via the T-710, then the T-702, and from there the T-713. Check road conditions before setting out. When planning your time in the area, it helps to keep the different time and equipment requirements in mind: allow at least one hour for Cova de la Taverna, and the required equipment is clearly specified; the trails and cultural sites offer other ways to shape your stay.

A recurring local celebration is Sant Salvador on August 6. It includes the traditional climb to the hermitage, a Mass and a communal breakfast. If you visit Margalef on that date, you can take this tradition into account when planning your stay.
