Rugged rock formations, caves and viewpoints characterize the protected natural area of Espai Natural de la Serra de Llaberia, which includes Capçanes. Hiking trails, the dry-stone structures of Les Taules and the Garnatxa wines of Celler de Capçanes give visitors different reasons to choose the area: landscape, cultural heritage and wine.
Nature, Dry Stone and Hiking Trails
The natural area is also characterized by rich biodiversity. The hiking trail network in Capçanes passes through ravines, alongside dry-stone walls and cliffs, and through Mediterranean forests. It ranges from family walks to climbs. The routes therefore differ in character; check the conditions on site for your chosen route.
One route starts in Capçanes and is marked as PR-C 91: Following in the Footsteps of the Guerrilla Fighter Carrasclet. It leads to Forat de la Roca de Llaberia, a viewpoint overlooking an agricultural plain and the surrounding mountain ranges. Along this route, you can approach Olla del Gegant in Barranc del Tortó to see a waterfall more than 15 metres high, carved into the rock. The viewpoint and waterfall showcase different aspects of the landscape.
Les Taules lies east of the town centre. A small area there contains a dense concentration of dry-stone walls, huts, shelters, livestock sheds, cisterns, bee houses, stone piles, protective shelters and a lime kiln. This variety makes Les Taules a tangible example of the dry-stone landscape of Capçanes.
Cycling Route, Climbing and Wine
For cyclists, the BTT route Cycling Through the Lands of the Guerrilla Fighter Carrasclet leads into the Barranco de la Vall as far as La Fou; the return route passes via Mas de la Vall and de Calàs. The Barranc del Tortó climbing area is located on the Cingles del Tortó, which are part of the EIN Serra de Llaberia.
At Celler de Capçanes, you can enjoy a guided tasting of four Garnatxa wines. The grapes grow on four different soil types typical of Montsant: Panal, Argila, Calissa and Llicorella. The tasting’s seasonal availability may vary; check in advance whether it is offered on your travel dates. Capçanes railway station is opposite the Celler. A few enterprising families founded the winery in 1933.
Carrasclet and Local Events
The Monument al Carrasclet commemorates the guerrilla fighter Pere Joan Barceló i Anguera (1687–1741), also known as Carrasclet. His name also appears in the titles of the hiking and BTT routes; the monument itself focuses on the person.
Recurring culinary events include Nit de les Garnatxes, which the Celler organizes every year as part of the events surrounding Fira del Vi. It features tastings of four Garnatxa wines, tapas from various restaurants, music and live performances. Dates and the programme may vary. For several years, the Associació de Dones de Capçanes has organized a competition for Truita amb suc, a dish considered typical of the region.
The Festa Major in honour of Sant Abdó and Sant Senén takes place on the last weekend of July and is celebrated mainly in the streets. In December, the Fira d'Artesania i Productes locals de Capçanes follows: market stalls fill Plaça de l'Església and the town’s streets. The last weekend of July and December offer two specific points of reference when planning your trip; exact dates, programmes and participating stalls may vary.
Travel Dates and Holiday Rental
If you are looking for a holiday rental for your stay, you can plan your travel dates around your main interest: a route, the wine tasting or a festival date. The tasting’s seasonal availability may vary; for events, check the exact dates and programmes. This makes it easier to match your accommodation search with the activities that interest you in Capçanes.
