La Vilella Baixa lies at the confluence of the Montsant River and the Escaladei stream. Steep terrain, historic buildings and marked trails give the village several different facets. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can plan around these specific interests: local history, festival dates, or walks and hikes.
Steep Terrain and Historic Buildings
The steep terrain led to the construction of houses with seven or eight storeys. Their main entrances are on the fourth or fifth floor. Building height and entrance level are therefore two different features: the storeys are not simply counted upwards from the front door. Carrer que no passa is an old uphill street with an old entrance portal. The parish church of Sant Joan Baptista is also part of the historic village; it dates from the 18th century.
The Romanesque bridge of La Vilella Baixa has three arches and spans the rivers. One event that connects the village’s history with the watercourse is the Aiguat de Sta. Tecla: on 23 September 1874, the floodwaters rose above the bridge. The first fortified enclosure and the castle were probably built by the Moors and repeatedly altered after the Reconquista. This probable origin of the structures remains a historical interpretation, not a definite attribution.
Festival Dates and Trails
The local festival of Santa Quitèria is celebrated on 22 May. The Festa Major takes place during the second celebration of Pentecost. If you are planning your trip around one of these festivals, you can check the dates against your travel days.
Five marked tourist walking trails offer opportunities for walks around the municipality. Hiking trails from La Vilella Baixa also lead into the Serra de Montsant. One specific route connects the village with La Figuera: it starts beside the Gran Bridge over the Montsant River and follows the old royal road, which traditionally linked the two villages, for much of the way. The route is marked in yellow.
Mas d'en Serres can also be reached from La Vilella Baixa via the marked Pla del Xorrac trail; the destination is 1 km away. Check current operating details before setting out.
