La Senia combines a rich local history with distinctive landscapes and festivals spread throughout the year. The aircraft museum and the history of an airfield from the Spanish Civil War give aviation a special place here. In the old town, traces of settlement and its location by the river reveal other facets of the town. When planning your trip, it is also helpful to distinguish between these year-round points of interest and festivals tied to specific dates.
Aviation History and Historical Traces
The Centre d’Aviació Històrica de la Sénia is an aircraft museum displaying various aviation objects from that period. The history of aviation in the region also includes the Camp d’Aviació de la Sénia: during the Spanish Civil War, the government of the Second Spanish Republic planned it as one of several military airfields in Catalonia. The museum and local history thus offer two different ways to explore the subject—through the objects on display and through the airfield’s planning at the time.
The history of settlement reaches further back. Archaeological evidence attests to prehistoric settlement; the medieval settlement charter of La Senia dates from 1232. Molà la Vella is also one of the town’s notable historic buildings: its history goes back more than 900 years. These different time spans make the town interesting for anyone who would like to explore more than one era during a visit.
The old town is situated in a defensive position beside a rocky escarpment on the Sénia River, which is almost 60 metres deep. A walk through the old town offers views of the surrounding natural landscape. Paths that converged near the river and led into the Els Ports area also belong to the oldest settlement zone. The location and connections between the paths give the town’s history a concrete spatial context.
Olive Plain and the Sénia River
Beyond the historic townscape, two distinct landscapes shape the picture of La Senia. The plain stretches out across an immense expanse of olive trees, like a sea. Signposted paths also lead to millennia-old olive trees. In the stretch that runs through the municipal area, the Sénia River is lined with dense riverside woodland. The olive landscape and wooded river stretch offer contrasting impressions: the broad plain with its ancient trees on one hand, and the riverside woodland along the river on the other.
La Senia is also home to the MontsiĂ Visitor Centre and the tourist information office. For visitors interested in the landscape or local history, these facilities complement the sights and topics described here.
Festivals and Dates Throughout the Year
Diada del Recapte takes place on the Monday closest to 9 May. It includes a communal meal featuring olla de recapte and pastisset, dishes typical of La Senia. This local tradition has been going on for more than thirty years. Festa de Sant Gregori is also celebrated on this Monday. It is associated with the Fira Gastronòmica de la Sénia, which takes place on the corresponding weekend. If you would like to plan your visit around these events, check the dates for the year in question.
A different time of year is marked by Festes Majors de la Sénia: they last ten days and take place in the second half of August. The celebrations honour Sant Bartomeu and Sant Roc; the programme includes horse races at the Pla de Roquillo racetrack. The May events and the August festival therefore fall at clearly different times of the year. It is also advisable to check the specific dates of the horse races each year.
