Poboleda on the Siurana, between two mountain landscapes
Poboleda sits on the slope of a hill on the right bank of the Siurana. Different landscapes meet within the municipality: the north is shaped by the last foothills of the Montsant Massif, while the south extends over the northwestern slopes of the Sierra del MollĂł. There are also riverside walking paths, historic buildings and wine experiences. If you are considering a stay in Poboleda, you can treat these as different points of interest without having to follow a set daily itinerary.
Portals, church and mill history
A walk through Poboleda takes you past the doorways of the manor houses on Carrer Major. The Church of Sant Pere Apòstol dates from the 18th century. Because of its size, it is also known as the Cathedral of the Priorat. Together, the doorways and the church offer two different insights into the townscape and its architectural history.
West of Poboleda, the Molà dels Frares, also known as Molà Draper, stands in the bed of the Siurana. The mill belonged to the Cartuja de Escaladei and was associated with a wool industry started by the Carthusian monks. Poboleda itself also has a historical connection to them: the monks lived in the town while the Cartuja de Escaladei was being built. At the mill, the focus is on their ownership and economic history; in Poboleda, the monks’ stay during the construction period is recorded.
Riverside walking paths and recreation areas
Walking paths follow the Siurana to the Font del Mingot. The riverside site there is suitable for a picnic, offering a specific reason to combine a walk with a break outdoors. There is also a recreation area near the Ermita de Maria Assumpta. The two places offer different ways to spend time outdoors: a picnic at the Font del Mingot, or a designated recreation area by the Ermita.
Wine visits with different focuses
Mas Doix offers winery visits and vineyard walks with wine tasting. At Mas Sinén, the offer includes a guided visit to the winery and vineyards, a tasting and views of the Priorat; reservations are required. Genium Celler runs tours lasting about an hour and a half, including a tasting of two wines and a look inside the barrel room. At Terres de Vidalba, visits take you through the vineyards, with the tasting held at the highest point of the estate.
For planning your time at Genium Celler, allow about an hour and a half for the tour. At Mas Sinén, making a reservation is part of the planning. Before your trip, check the current availability of wine visits, whether their focus is on winery visits and tastings or walks through the vines.
Poboleda’s traditional cuisine
Local specialties include cocas, orejetas and romesco with escarole. Almonds, hazelnuts and DOC Priorat wine are also part of the local offering. This gives visitors specific regional options if they want to focus their stay on food as well as heritage and walking paths; the selection includes dishes, nuts and wine with the DOC Priorat designation of origin.
Getting there and the Priorat Route 14
From Reus, take the C-242 to La Venta d’en Pubill, then continue on the T-702. Check for temporary road closures before setting off. Another way to explore the area is the Priorat Route 14: it reaches Poboleda at kilometre 7.35 and offers views of Montsant and large parts of the Priorat. If you drive the route, check the signage and conditions in advance. This lets you plan the road journey and the route separately.
