Tivenys lies on the left bank of the Ebro. The river landscape, mountain ranges and architectural history offer a variety of ways to explore the area, from the Assut and the Poblat Ibèric to churches, a mill and the industrial use of hydropower. Paths, the market and festivals add to these themes. You can therefore get to know Tivenys through its landscape, archaeology, architecture or local traditions.

Landscape, river and paths

Tivenys is surrounded by the mountain ranges of the Serra de Cardó and the Serra del Boix. The named peaks and rock formations include Punta de l’Agulla, Creu de Santos, Roca Foradada and Buinaca. The Assut is a hydraulic structure 375 metres long and 7 metres high. These measurements give a concrete sense of its construction.

The Camí del parc a l’Assut is a walking path from the town park in Tivenys to the Assut, running along the Ebro. Castell de Som offers a different view of the surroundings: the now-ruined fortification consists of walls with loopholes enclosing a small, narrow area. From there, the view extends over the Ebro valley and the Assut.

The Poblat Ibèric is also on the left bank of the Ebro, on a hill at the mouth of the Pas de Barrufemes gorge. The site lies between the Serra de Cardó and the northern edge of the Ports de Tortosa-Beseit, which includes the d’Àguiles and Vallplana mountain ranges. Settlement here dates back to the 7th century BC; a fortified tower house dates from the 6th century BC. A signposted historic memorial route runs around the Poblat and past fortifications, trenches and defensive positions. The routes therefore differ in their focus: the Camí follows the Ebro, while the memorial route centres on the archaeological and military remains.

Architecture and industrial history

The Església Sant Miquel has three naves and eight side altars. The main nave is designed in the Gothic and Byzantine styles, while the façade is neoclassical. A notably tall bell tower with an octagonal ground plan stands beside it. The Antiga església de Sant Isidre preserves a different architectural detail: a round-arched portal made of wedge-shaped stones, complemented by a corbel and the coat of arms of the Pinyol family.

La Torre can also be understood through its form and history. It was part of a series of towers on both sides of the river that protected the upper estuary. Its structure is entirely square. Together, these historic buildings illustrate different aspects of local history: religious architecture, a river defence system and a distinctive portal.

The history of the Molí de Sorra began in 1957, when Fco. Beltran Barberà bought an existing mill in Tivenys at C. Tortosa 78. The traditional mill operated with millstones and a hydraulic press. La Farinera, also known as the González brothers’ factory, is near the Assut; the Ebro’s left canal runs below it. Its current powered wheels that crushed wheat and processed it into flour. While the Molí de Sorra centres on millstones and a press, La Farinera illustrates how the canal’s current was used for milling.

Market, festivals and activities

A market is held in Plaça Major on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The goods on offer include fruit, vegetables, salt cod, olives and roast chicken; the selection may vary. Check the market days before your trip. Another local tradition is the Jota de Tivenys: it is currently performed only during the summer festival, with its melody and dance. If you want to plan around a performance, check the festival date.

La Publicata is associated with the main Sant Antoni festival and is historically linked to the depiction of the Barraca. In the traditional performance, participants walk or ride through the streets on mules, hinnies or donkeys, reciting ironic or sarcastic verses. The specific staging may vary from one edition to another.

Tivenys is suitable for river sports such as canoeing and for fishing for catfish, bass, shad and largemouth bass. The route designated as a family cycling route, Assut de Tivenys and Les Planetes, leads to Tivenys; from there, the riverside promenade leads to l’Assut. Another excursion goes to Pont d’Orient and continues to Coll de Xeta, where Clenxa del Boix begins. The activities described therefore offer a range of options: river sports and fishing, a cycling route connecting to the riverside promenade, or an excursion to the named landmarks.
