At Cadolles Fondes, the Montsant River has hollowed out the rock, creating cliffs on both sides. Together with the three-hour Ulldemolins–Sant Bartomeu route, this offers a clear focus for hiking; the Renaissance church, hermitages, and festival traditions provide another way to explore the town. When planning your trip, you can choose between a hike with a clearly specified trail and a stay focused on cultural history.

Hiking in Congost de Fraguerau

Congost de Fraguerau is the valley of the Montsant River between the Montsant and Llena mountain ranges. Its landscape includes conglomerate cliffs and lush vegetation. Cadolles Fondes is a distinctive feature of the river's course: the water has hollowed out the rock there, creating a cliff on both sides. The valley therefore showcases both its landscape and the shapes carved into the rock by the river.

One specific hike is Route 2, Ulldemolins–Sant Bartomeu. It is listed as taking three hours and passes the Ermita de Sant Antoni, Cadolles Fondes, Congost de Fraguerau, and Ermita de Sant Bartomeu. The destination lies in a side ravine of the Congost, downstream from Ulldemolins, and can only be reached on foot. Check trail conditions before setting out; the stated duration is no substitute for assessing conditions on the day of your visit.

The Ermita de Sant Antoni i Santa BĂ rbara is another notable stop along the route. The irregularly shaped, single-storey building is built against the mountain rock. The hermitage has accommodation for 20 people, a camping area, bar service, and public tables and fire pits. If you would like to include any of these facilities in your plans, check their current availability in advance.

Churches and hermitages

The church of Sant Jaume d’Ulldemolins is considered one of the most complete Renaissance buildings in Catalonia. It was built between 1584 and 1591 under the direction of Pere Blai. Its construction period provides a precise historical reference point for the town's Renaissance heritage. The Ermita de Santa Magdalena was founded as early as 1558; its wall paintings are by Josep Juncosa and date to 1662. The foundation and the paintings represent two separate milestones in the history of the hermitage.

At the Ermita de Sant Bartomeu, landscape meets an uncertain building history: it lies in a side ravine of Congost de Fraguerau and may have been built over an older hermitage in the 13th century. Both the possible earlier predecessor and the building date, which is likewise only suggested, should be understood as conjectures, not as confirmed dating.

The Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Loreto preserves a vow made by the town in the late 17th century. It dates back to the period following protection from the 1685 locust plague. Together with the history of the churches and hermitages, this tradition reveals another, religious side of the local cultural heritage.

Festivals and local traditions

The Aplec de Sant Bartomeu is the main festival of the Ermita de Sant Bartomeu and takes place on August 24. As the annual program may vary, check the dates for the year you plan to travel. This lets you plan a visit around the Aplec without assuming that the recurring festival date comes with an unchanged program.

Another local tradition links Ulldemolins with a dish: the Diada de la Truita amb Suc is an annual festival based on a traditional dish. It began in 1982 as a street festival featuring a Truita amb Suc competition. Check the exact date before your trip. The timing therefore depends on what you are planning around: Route 2 is listed as taking three hours, the Aplec takes place on August 24, and the Diada is scheduled for a date that varies each year.
