Horta de Sant Joan offers two distinctive ways to explore its history: the layout of the historic centre and Picasso’s works. There, narrow, concentric streets have been preserved; they once surrounded the now-vanished castle. Their layout connects the townscape with the former castle complex. This provides a tangible point of reference for the town’s history; the art at the Centre Picasso d’Horta adds another perspective through Picasso’s work in Horta.
Picasso’s Works and the History of the Town
The Centre Picasso d’Horta is a lasting tribute to Picasso. It displays reproductions, as faithful to the originals as possible, of all the works the artist created in Horta. An exhibition at the Centre also documents the 78 years of uninterrupted friendship between Picasso and Manuel Pallarès. The two aspects have different focuses: the reproductions turn attention to the works created in Horta, while the exhibition explores the long friendship with Pallarès. This offers a way to consider Picasso’s connection to the town through both his art and this relationship.
Nature and Routes with Different Focuses
La Franqueta is an easily accessible recreational area beside the River dels Estrets. Four paths and two freely accessible outdoor interpretation areas offer different ways to explore: the paths invite you to discover the area along the routes, while the outdoor areas provide nature interpretation. When planning your visit, you can consider these as different experiences rather than as a single offering.
The circular route at Mas de Burot is designed for family tourism. Children can take part in its stops and activities with adult support. This is an important condition to bear in mind when planning a visit together. Les Roques de Benet offer a different kind of nature experience: this mountain formation is one of the most distinctive and best-known in the Parc Natural dels Ports. Its vertical conglomerate walls rise almost 300 m high. Another route runs clockwise from the hermitage of Sant Salvador d’Horta up to the ruins of Santa Bà rbara Castle.
The nature experiences therefore differ in their specific focus: La Franqueta offers paths and interpretation areas, Mas de Burot has family-oriented stops and activities, and the steep conglomerate walls define the experience at Les Roques de Benet. The circular route from Sant Salvador d’Horta to the castle ruins, in turn, follows a clearly defined path with named starting and finishing points.
Festivals, Dates and Local Cuisine
The festivals also give trips a seasonal and cultural focus. The Festa de Sant Salvador takes place on 18 March at the Convent de Sant Salvador; it includes a pilgrimage in the area around the monastery. The Festa de la Costa falls on the Saturday after 24 September. If 24 September itself is a Saturday, the festival is held that day. Fires are lit, sardines, meat and sausages are grilled, and the Jota d’Horta is danced.
Dolça Tardor takes place on the first Sunday in October in the old town and is a fair for artisan-made products. Check the programme for the relevant year before travelling. One local culinary speciality is Mostillo, a dessert made from grape must and dried fruit.
