Alcanar brings together archaeological history, architecture and nature trails, with a seasonal culinary touch. The Moleta del Remei represents a long history of Iberian settlement; the Casa O’Connor combines a Modernist mansion with an interpretation centre for Iberian culture. Other highlights include a historic cistern, the parish church of Sant Miquel and two differently named routes. When planning your trip, you can choose between archaeological and architectural themes, outdoor activities and a seasonal perspective on local cuisine.
Iberian history at the Moleta del Remei
The Moleta del Remei is an important Early Iron Age settlement and later became a long-standing Iberian settlement. It was continuously inhabited from the 7th to the 2nd century BC. This long period makes the continuity of settlement a central feature of the site. The archaeological site of the Moleta del Remei is also part of the Ruta dels Ibers. This allows you to explore Iberian history both at a specific settlement site and as part of a themed route.
Modernisme and archaeological finds
Another cultural highlight is the Casa O’Connor, a Modernist mansion that houses the Centre d’Interpretació de la Cultura dels Ibers. The preserved building and its wall decorations are an excellent example of Modernisme. The centre displays original archaeological materials from Sant Jaume - Mas d’en Serrà and the Moleta del Remei. This brings together two distinct perspectives: the architecture and wall decorations of the house, and finds from named archaeological sites. The Casa O’Connor offers a different focus from the Moleta del Remei: here, the preserved Modernist building sits alongside an exhibition about Iberian culture.
Cistern and parish church
The Cisterna del Vall adds a structure for water storage to the area’s cultural and historical highlights. It dates from 1600 and could store up to 1,200,000 litres of water. This figure conveys the scale of the structure and makes water storage a tangible aspect of local history.
The Església de Sant Miquel is Alcanar’s Catholic parish church. It was built to replace an older church building, documented since 1363. Its architectural features include a Renaissance portal and the rose window above it. This subject therefore encompasses both the history of a predecessor building and specific details of the church’s design.
Nature trails and traces of the Civil War
For outdoor activities, there is the Pujada a la Cogula nature trail, intended for hikers and walkers. The Circuit eco-turĂstic de l’Estanyet a Sòl de Riu is a green coastal path. The descriptions emphasise different aspects: hiking and walking are explicitly mentioned for the Pujada a la Cogula, while the Circuit’s coastal character is its main focus. This lets you choose the routes according to the kind of natural setting you are looking for.
Along the coast of Les Cases d’Alcanar and at various points in the Serra del Montsià , remnants of Civil War defences are signposted with information boards. They add a historical perspective on defensive remains along the coast and in the Serra. The boards provide context to help explain these traces.
Seasonal cuisine between November and December
Between November and December, visitors can enjoy the Jornades Gastronòmiques dels CĂtrics. Restaurants belonging to the local gastronomic club prepare special menus for the event, featuring citrus fruit as the main ingredient during the clementine season. If you are planning your trip around the Jornades, check the specific event dates in advance.
