Lilla lies below Coll de Lilla, a natural pass between Valls and Montblanc, and at the foot of the Serra Carbonària. It is also next to the N-240. The pass, Serra Carbonària and road give you different geographic reference points for the village. Excursions are possible in the area around Lilla, so you can plan to explore beyond the historical sites in the village and include the surrounding area.

Location and Hiking Trails

You can also include hiking in your plans: a route description dated February 21, 2007, takes you onto the GR 7 near Lilla and describes it as one of Catalonia’s most important hiking trails. For your specific hiking plans, check trail conditions locally.

Castle and Village History

The castle is one of Lilla’s older historical subjects. During the Andalusi period, Muslims built a castle in Lilla to defend and control Coll de Lilla. The structure and the pass are thus clearly linked historically: the stated functions related to Coll de Lilla. The fortress is said to have already been conquered by Christian forces around 1011. The resettlement of Lilla did not begin until the mid-12th century. The approximate date of the conquest and the later start of resettlement are two separate historical details.

Another architectural detail is preserved in the building that once housed Lilla’s school and syndicate: a lintel dated 1610 with the inscription “misser Antoni Magrinyà.” A lintel is the horizontal structural element above a doorway. Here, its date and inscription make the feature a specific point of reference alongside the broader subjects of the castle and resettlement.

Sant Fructuós Chapel and Festa Major

Sant Fructuós Chapel was inaugurated and blessed in 1996. Its apse contains an image of the saint, created by the artist Joan Rosich Andreu from Vilaverd. The chapel’s specific details therefore include both a dated event and a named work of art. An apse is the usually semicircular or polygonal end of a church interior; this helps clarify where the image is located within the chapel.

Lilla’s Festa Major takes place on the last weekend of August. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition, as future festival dates may change.

These options offer different focuses for planning your trip: the village’s history, excursions in the surrounding area, the described hiking route or the Festa Major. When hiking, it is important to check trail conditions locally; for the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
