Two themes guide your trip planning in Vinyols: the architectural history around the main square and the festivals, with their Catalan food and traditions. Plaça de la Vila, also known as el Replà, is the main centre. The castle and parish church once stood here; today, the parish church and town hall occupy the square. This makes it a clear reference point for distinguishing between the town’s historic and present-day layout. If you are looking for a hotel in Vinyols, you can first decide whether to focus mainly on the historic buildings or on a festival taking place on a particular date.

The Square and Architectural History

The present-day parish church, Església de Santa Caterina, was built between 1770 and 1778 over an earlier temple. The predecessor building and the present church are therefore part of the same architectural history. Cal Nicolau, also known as Casa de Donya Blanca, likewise brings together several periods: it was built in the early 18th century over older buildings that belonged to the Folc family. Cal Nicolau is protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest.

The townscape also includes two houses associated with defensive towers. The tower connected to Casa de la Vila is well preserved and was built in 1560 by Francesc Torrell i Pradell. The construction date of Casa Torrell is less precisely established: the Torrell family probably built it towards the end of the 16th century, and a defensive tower is structurally connected to the house.

Another trace of the past is the medieval covered spring at La Fontcoberta, which is currently dry. It is thought to be the only surviving architectural evidence of Castell dels Arcs. As a separate geographical note, the remains of what may have been Castell dels Arcs are located within the municipality, north of the new road between Salou and Cambrils.

Festivals, Samfaina and Caterineta

The Festa Major de Sant Joan is Vinyols i els Arcs’ summer festival dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. It includes a bonfire on the eve of the feast; on 24 June, cultural, sporting and religious events take place. The annual programme may vary. The Diada de la Samfaina is also held as part of this festival. It celebrates samfaina, a Catalan sauce made with seasonal vegetables and local produce.

Another culinary tradition is part of the Festa Major de Santa Caterina: it includes a tasting of Caterineta, a drink typical of Vinyols. The festival opens with the Vinyartia arts and crafts fair. The two Festa Majors therefore have different cultural and culinary focuses. The MaratĂł per Relleus also offers a specific date to plan around: it has been organised in Vinyols i els Arcs since 2016 and takes place in September. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival or event, check the dates and programme in advance.

Transport Connections for Planning

Roads connect Vinyols i els Arcs with Riudoms and Reus. The N-340 runs through the southern part of the municipality near Sant Joan dels Arcs; it runs roughly parallel to the AP-7 in the direction of Valencia. The train station on the Tarragona–Tortosa line is in Cambrils.
