Paüls lies entirely within Parc Natural dels Ports. The Itinerario de la Fuente del Teix circular route makes it easy to plan an outing near Sant Roc, with specific route details. The Church of Santa Maria, the castle ruins, an exhibition about birds and local traditions also shape the town’s cultural offerings.
Hiking and scenery around Sant Roc
The Sant Roc recreation area is near the Sant Roc hermitage and is surrounded by Aleppo pines and holm oaks. From Paüls, the hermitage and recreation area can be reached after 2.3 kilometres, passing through cherry orchards. The Itinerario de la Fuente del Teix circular route starts and ends at the recreation area—a clear reference point if you include this loop in your plans.
The loop is 4.5 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 180 metres and takes about an hour. Its difficulty level is low. The duration is approximate; together with the distance and elevation gain, it provides a guide for planning your time. Along the route, cherry, almond and olive groves give way to dense pine and holm oak forests. This makes it possible to assess the route not only by its measurements but also by the described sequence of orchards and woodland.
The GR-7 long-distance trail passes through Sant Roc and the town of Paüls. Near Paüls, the GR-171 rejoins the main trail and then heads towards Prat de Comte. The routes therefore offer different points of reference: Sant Roc and the town are part of the GR-7 route, while the GR-171 rejoins the main trail before heading towards Prat de Comte. Check the route details before setting out.
Buildings, exhibition and traditions
The Church of Santa Maria in Paüls is built in the Early Gothic style and may date from the 13th century. Some sections of wall remain on the site of the castle of Arab origin. The two historic sites offer different points of interest: Santa Maria is notable for its architectural style and possible date, while the castle is notable for its Arab origins and surviving walls.
The permanent exhibition Els Ocells a Paüls is about birds that live year-round in the town and in the surrounding fields, forests and scrubland. Its subject therefore encompasses Paüls itself as well as the different landscapes around it. For trip planning, the exhibition complements the buildings with a focus on natural history.
The Festa de la Cirera cherry festival in Paüls takes place on the first weekend in June. The jota is Paüls’s folk dance and is performed mainly during the Festes Majors. It is learned by ear and passed down from generation to generation. The festival calendar and the dance’s tradition offer different ways to experience local culture.
The Corros near Sant Roc are also part of local tradition: each corro belongs to a family from Paüls, which maintains it and uses it twice a year—on Sant Antoni Day and Sant Roc Day. Regular use on these two days is another specific expression of local customs, alongside the festivals and the dance.
