La Galera is best discovered through its pottery tradition. At Terracota, pottery is the subject of an exhibition; routes also lead to the town centre and through an agricultural landscape shaped by olive groves. The historic Torre de la Galera is another specific point of interest to help you plan your trip. You can choose to focus on pottery-making, local history or the landscape.

Terracota: pottery-making and changing exhibitions

Terracota, the Centre d'Interpretació de la Terrissa de la Galera, is dedicated to pottery. The first exhibition room explains, step by step, how a piece of pottery is made using both traditional and modern methods. The making process itself is therefore at the heart of the exhibition. The second room is devoted to changing exhibitions on painting, sculpture, crafts, ceramics and history. While the first room explains how pottery is made, the second offers a different thematic perspective; the exhibitions change over time.

Terracota is open year-round from Wednesday to Friday, 09:30 to 13:30, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, 12:00 to 14:00. Visits outside these hours can be arranged. Check the opening hours before travelling.

Pottery tradition and a visit to a workshop

Potters have been making clay vessels in La Galera since the 18th century. This long craft tradition connects the exhibition's subject with a specific local trade. The themed tour La Terrissa i la Galera visits the town's last active pottery workshop, where the master potter demonstrates how a piece is made. This adds a live demonstration at the pottery workshop to the explanation at Terracota: the centre focuses on traditional and modern methods, while the tour shows a piece being made on site.

Watchtower and old bridge

The Torre de la Galera was built as a watchtower between 1340 and 1342. Another historic sight is the Pont sobre el Barranc de la Galera. It is probably medieval in date, and the bridge has a single semicircular arch. The two structures offer different points of interest: the Torre is notable for its construction date and defensive function, while the Pont is notable for its cautiously attributed date and its arch shape.

Two routes with different points of interest

The Itinerari pel barranc de la Galera route leads to the centre of La Galera and the old bridge over the Barranc de la Galera. By contrast, the signposted Oliveres Mil.lenàries route passes through the municipalities of La Galera, Godall and Ulldecona and through an agricultural landscape shaped by dry-farmed olive groves. The routes therefore have different focuses: one leads to the town centre and the bridge, while the other passes through an agricultural landscape.

Two starting points are listed for Oliveres Mil.lenàries: one is at the roundabout on the access road to La Galera and Godall, and another is at the Quatre Carreteres junction near Ulldecona. This information helps you locate the route geographically without confusing its destinations with those of the Itinerari pel barranc. When choosing between the routes, you can therefore consider their respective points of interest: the town centre and old bridge on the one hand, olive groves and three municipalities on the other.

The Argila pottery fair

Argila, Fira de la Terrissa de la Galera, is a recurring pottery and ceramics fair in La Galera. Dates and programme vary from year to year. If the fair is important to your travel plans, check the dates for your preferred travel period.
