Perafort can be viewed from three perspectives: archaeological remains, varied terrain and a calendar of festivals spread throughout the year. This means that your travel decision need not be based solely on an interest in history; the landscape and the month of your visit also offer practical points of reference.

Archaeological traces from several periods

Remains of Neanderthals were found at the Vinyes Gran archaeological site. The remains of the Roman villa La Barquera were discovered in Perafort during sewer works. Two monumental tombs dating from the 4th and 5th centuries AD were also discovered in Perafort and later moved to the town centre. The ruins of the former Codony Abbey date from the 14th century.

The historical span therefore ranges from prehistoric finds through Roman times to medieval ruins. Perafort’s history is not defined by a single monument or period: its remains represent different points in time.

Terrain and agricultural character

Near the Francolí River, the municipality’s terrain is flat. In the eastern part, Miocene formations create undulating terrain with small hills. The areas near the river and in the eastern part of the municipality therefore have different terrain characteristics. This contrast offers a practical point of reference if you would like to get a sense of the landscape.

Agriculture is also part of the area’s character. Perafort’s main permanent crops include hazelnuts, grapevines and olives; wheat and oats are among its cereal crops. These agricultural features complement the picture given by the terrain.

Getting there and finding your way

A section of the N-240 from Tarragona to Valls runs through the municipality of Perafort. Camp de Tarragona railway station is located on a site shared by Perafort and La Secuita; it was formerly known as Secuita-Perafort. If you are planning to travel by train, check the station name and available services before your trip. These are two distinct points to bear in mind when planning road and rail travel: the N-240 runs through the municipality, while the station information identifies its shared location.

Festivals throughout the year

The annual events calendar offers three seasonal points of reference. The Festa Major de Sant Pere takes place in June. September features the Bicicletada popular, a popular group bike ride, followed in November by the Festa de l’Oli, a festival with a culinary focus. The events are spread across different months and have different themes: a local festival, a bike ride and a food-focused festival. Exact dates may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the calendar and the specific date before setting your travel dates.
