La Bisbal del Penedès brings together viewpoints, paths through the municipality and traces of dry-stone construction, as well as opportunities to discover its cultural history. When planning, it is worth considering the different route types and difficulty levels: the Camí Ral crosses the municipality, while another route is described as an easy, mostly flat tour; a further option is a moderately difficult circular route. Archaeological finds and historic buildings add more points of interest to the landscape.

Routes by type and difficulty

Route 1, the section of the Camí Ral that runs through Bisbal, crosses the municipality from east to west and is not a circular route. Its highest point is at the Ermita de Santa Cristina, at an elevation of 364 metres. From there, panoramic views extend across the municipality and its surroundings; how far you can see depends on the conditions.

Route 2 can be completed on foot or by mountain bike, as most of its paths are suitable for cycling. It is easy, mostly flat and 8.5 kilometres long. The approximate duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes. If you are looking for a circular route, consider the La Meixa – Puig de Vilafranca – Barraca del Vi route: it is of moderate difficulty, about 13 kilometres long and loops around the Serra de la Costa to the 452-metre-high Puig de Vilafranca. Trail conditions can change, so it is a good idea to check them before setting out.

Along the La Meixa – Puig de Vilafranca – Barraca del Vi route are dry-stone structures such as the Barraca del Cosme, the Barraca del Lluciet, the Barraca del Jep and the Barraca del Vi, as well as the Pallissa del Tot-Arreu and the Pallissa del Tendral. The condition of each structure may vary. The routes around la Bisbal also reveal the terraces, huts and paved paths that form part of the area’s extensive dry-stone heritage.

Views and water at Els Safareig

The Mirador Riera de la Bisbal viewpoint offers views of the Riera de la Bisbal, the municipality’s Mediterranean farmland and several prominent peaks: Puig Francàs, El Montmell, Puig de la Cova, Puig Coscollar and Puig de Vilafranca. As with other viewpoints, visibility depends on the weather.

Els Safareig offers a different kind of landscape experience. There, an overflow of natural water feeds the long livestock trough and the washhouses. The fountain and washhouse complex is around 500 years old; water conditions may vary. At this site, the flow of water, livestock trough and washhouses are described as parts of a connected system.

Finds, buildings and local history

At the Centre Municipal de Cultura, you can see prehistoric pottery finds and flint tools from the Chalcolithic period, as well as remains of Iberian-Roman settlements from la Bisbal del Penedès. The finds point to two distinct periods in local history. Les Escoles offers another glimpse of the past through its architecture: the building, in the Noucentisme style, was designed by the architect Antoni Pons.

The historic centre also has a clearly defined character, with centuries-old manor houses and narrow lanes. L’Ortigós offers a different perspective: the hamlet is clustered around a medieval watchtower, popularly known as the Torre dels Moros.

The Art Urbà a la Bisbal project adds another point of interest. It comprises a total of 27 murals in la Bisbal del Penedès, many of which include augmented reality elements. Together with the architecture and archaeological finds, the project highlights the town’s various cultural facets.
