Discover Alforja along two long hiking trails with distinctly different difficulty levels. The Ruta de les Ermites combines views over the valleys of Alforja and much of the Tarragona coast with the historic route used by pilgrims and processions. Route 4: El Mirador leads to the highest point in the municipality. Other highlights include an old town with a medieval character, historic religious buildings, insights into cheesemaking and beekeeping, and traditional festivals. Together, these give you several specific highlights to consider when planning your stay.

Two hiking trails with different levels of difficulty

The Ruta de les Ermites starts at Parc Amics d’Alforja. This circular route is 14.6 kilometres long, takes about four hours and is rated as moderate. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views over the valleys of Alforja and much of the Tarragona coast. The route also follows the historic path that pilgrims and processions have used to reach the sanctuary for centuries. Here, the landscape and the path’s traditional use come together.

Route 4: El Mirador also starts at Parc Amics d’Alforja. It is 14.9 kilometres long, takes about five hours and is rated as difficult. Its destination is El Mirador, at an altitude of 915 metres, the highest point in the municipality of Alforja. On the return journey, the route follows the old road to Porrera, which runs parallel to the Riera d’Alforja.

The routes differ in length by just 0.3 kilometres, while Route 4 takes about an hour longer and is rated difficult rather than moderate. So distance alone isn’t what matters when choosing between them: the duration and difficulty ratings make the difference clear. The Ruta de les Ermites has a historic connection to pilgrimage, while Route 4 leads to the highest point in the municipality and returns along the old road to Porrera.

Old town and historic buildings

Alforja’s old town retains its medieval character. The Church of Sant Miquel was built in the 17th century on the foundations of an earlier Romanesque temple. Its construction history thus links the later church building with an older religious structure.

The Ermita de Sant Antoni dates from the 18th century. Many excursions lead there, and the hermitage has a well-known spring. Alongside the historic buildings, it offers an excursion destination and a landmark in the landscape.

Cheese, bees and traditional festivals

At Celler Mas del Botó, visitors can learn how milk is made into six different types of cheese. They can also dress up as beekeepers and find out how bees work in their hives. The two activities focus on different topics: processing milk and the work of bees in the hive. If you’re looking for insights into these processes as well as hiking trails and buildings, the Celler offers a distinct experience.

Traditional festivals also offer a range of ways to get involved. The Festa Castellera is a traditional festival in Alforja held in July. The Festa de l’Oli d’Alforja celebrates the arrival of the first-pressing oil and includes tastings of artisan products made in Alforja. The traditional Festa del „Pataco“ takes place in August and is associated with a typical local dish. If you’re planning a trip around a festival, July for the Festa Castellera and August for the Festa del „Pataco“ are specific dates to bear in mind; the Festa de l’Oli offers a culinary focus on first-pressing oil and products from Alforja.
