Altafulla brings together several distinct themes for planning a trip: a medieval walled old town, Roman archaeology, a route for walking and cycling, and a small coastal cove. You can focus on history, outdoor activity or coastal scenery rather than treating everything as one single itinerary. Getting around also involves two separate areas: the RENFE railway line separates the old town from the beach area; Altafulla-Tamarit station is located on the line.

Local history and Roman heritage

Vila Closa is Altafulla’s old medieval walled town. Castell d'Altafulla dates from 1059 and is also known as Palau dels Montserrat. Els Munts takes you back much further: the Roman villa was built in the 1st century AD near Altafulla beach. It is also part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Roman Tarraco, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The dates serve different purposes: 1059 dates the Castell, while 2000 is the year the ensemble received UNESCO recognition.

Guided tours and seasonal experiences

The guided tour of Vila Closa includes the Church of Sant Martí and must be booked in advance. The guided tour of Castell d'Altafulla lasts 30 minutes. The planning details therefore differ: Vila Closa requires advance booking, while the duration of the Castell tour is specified. Check the current tour dates before your trip.

In summer, the Museu Nacional Arqueològic de Tarragona holds theatrical tours at Els Munts. As this is a seasonal programme, check for suitable dates during your travel period. This lets you choose between a visit focused on archaeology and a seasonal guided experience when planning your trip.

On foot or by bike

The Ronda Verda del Baix Gaià starts near the Ermita de Sant Antoni d'Altafulla. From there, you can explore it on foot or by bike. It includes a network of rural paths about 30 kilometres long, connecting several municipalities in Baix Gaià. The approximately 30 kilometres refer to the length of the network of paths, not the duration of a single excursion.

Olla d'Altafulla

Olla d'Altafulla also gives your trip a specific culinary focus. It is made with a vegetable sofregit, chickpeas, potatoes, rabbit, chicken and pork. Its defining feature is a secret romesco sauce. The named ingredients and distinctive sauce make Olla a facet of Altafulla in its own right, alongside its historic and scenic attractions.

The coast of Altafulla

Playa del Canyadell offers a different focus from Vila Closa and Els Munts: it is a small, semi-urban cove in Altafulla with fine golden sand. If you would rather seek out coastal scenery than another historical attraction, this description offers a specific point of reference. Your trip planning can therefore take in historic sites, walking or cycling routes, a local dish and the coast as distinct interests.
