Gandesa offers several distinct ways to explore culture and history: Romanesque and Gothic architecture, Iberian traces, memories of the Battle of the Ebro and wine traditions. When planning your trip, it is worth checking the practical details: guided wine tours require advance booking, and some festivals take place on specific dates.

Romanesque and Gothic architectural history

Construction of the Church of the Virgen de la Asunción began in the 12th century. The present-day building preserves its Romanesque apse and portal; as an Asset of National Cultural Interest, the church is classified as a historic monument. The Casa de la Vila Vella offers a different architectural accent: this late-medieval building in the civil Gothic style dates from the 15th century and was partly incorporated when the church was expanded. These buildings bring Romanesque forms and civil Gothic together, while their architectural development also reflects their connection to the church’s history.

Iberian traces and memories of the Ebro

The Coll del Moro archaeological site is part of the Ruta de los Iberos. The Iberian settlement is believed to date back to the 6th to 5th centuries BC. It includes one of the few surviving necropolises of Iberian settlements in Catalonia. The site thus brings together two specific aspects of Iberian history: early settlement and a rarely preserved necropolis.

The CEBE collection offers another perspective on history. It presents weapons, ammunition, uniforms and personal belongings from the material and documentary collections of the Centre d’Estudis de la Batalla de l’Ebre. The Centre was established at the initiative of a group of scholars and collectors from Gandesa who were interested in the Battle of the Ebro and in preserving documentary, military and cultural materials.

Wine tours and the Festa del Vi

The Celler Cooperatiu de Gandesa offers guided tours with wine tasting by advance reservation. Check the booking arrangements before your trip. The Festa del Vi offers a different setting for enjoying wine and takes place on the first weekend of November. Wines from the Denominación de Origen Terra Alta are available for tasting from various cooperatives and private wineries around the Cooperativa de Gandesa. This distinction is useful when planning: the guided tour requires advance booking, while the festival takes place on a specific weekend. Confirm the dates and program for that year’s Festa del Vi before your trip.

Festivals, processions and landscapes

The Festa de Sant Antoni takes place on January 17; its tradition in Gandesa has been documented in writing since 1801. The traditional proceedings include Gandesa residents gathering firewood. It is then auctioned along with Coca and Rodot de Sant Antoni. Here too, it is worth checking the program for the year of your trip. The Romeria a la Fontcalda takes place on the first Sunday in May. Its traditional proceedings include a procession that leaves the church at 7 a.m. and makes its way to the sanctuary.

Other cultural customs add to these events: El Panilló is a Gandesa tradition celebrated on All Saints’ Day. During processions, the figures En Gori and la Fontcalda are always accompanied by the “Etzimbori” grallers group from Gandesa. The La Farsa theatre group commemorates the historical event of October 17, 1319, known as the Farsa de Gandesa; the group has also staged street performances and puppet theatre activities.

At the Santuario de La Fontcalda, the Canaletes River narrows into a small gorge with ponds and natural pools. At the end of this stretch of gorge is a thermal spring with a temperature of 25 °C. This landscape offers a different way to explore the area than its architectural and collection history: here, the focus is on the river, the gorge and the natural spring.
