Covered street sections, known as perxes, shape La Fatarella’s narrow, winding old town. Together with the dry-stone landscape, historic landmarks and local products, they offer different ways to plan a stay: architecture, landscape, history or cuisine.
Old Town and Architecture
The old town consists of narrow, winding streets within the former town walls. The Perxe de ca Felip provides a tangible example of the covered passageways: it consists of three stone arches and covers an area of 54 m².
The Església de Sant Andreu is another architectural landmark. Construction began in 1628, and the church was completed in 1769. The interior is designed in the Renaissance style and features Late Gothic elements in the vault; the main façade is Baroque. Several distinct stylistic features thus come together in the same building.
Landscape and Route
La Fatarella’s agricultural dry landscape is shaped by dry-stone walls. Its features include field boundaries, huts, mills and waterwheels. This gives the landscape a different focus from the old town’s narrow streets and covered passageways.
If you would like to include a route in your plans, the local variant of the Ruta de la Pau starts and ends in La Fatarella. The town is therefore both the starting point and the endpoint of this variant.
Historic Landmarks
The Memorial de les Camposines is located in the les Camposines area of La Fatarella. Les Devees was a rear position in La Fatarella’s defensive network. The surviving shelter was built by soldiers as a place of refuge and a sleeping chamber; a zigzag section of a trench is still visible above it.
The CI Internacionals a l’Ebre offers another perspective on history: it shows how the involvement of other countries affected both sides in the Battle of the Ebro. Together with the landmarks at Les Devees and les Camposines, it offers a distinct historical focus alongside the architecture of the old town.
Experiences and Events
L’Or de la Fatarella is a playful, QR-code-guided cultural experience in the old town. Visitors solve eight riddles. The experience is particularly suitable for families and is available in Catalan, Spanish, English and French. Its story is set in 1374 and revolves around the search for a treasure kept in La Fatarella by a royal chaplain.
The Romeria de Sant Francisco takes place every year on the first Saturday after Easter. It begins with a procession from La Fatarella to the Ermita de Sant Francisco, 12 km away. If you would like to plan your trip around the Romeria, check the date for the relevant year.
Olive Oil and Local Products
The Festa de l’Oli is a fair for extra virgin olive oil, with a particular focus on Empeltre, the variety characteristic of the region. The fair also promotes local products. The extra virgin olive oil produced in La Fatarella is made mainly from Empeltre olives, with a significant proportion of Arbequina olives, and comes under the DOP Oli de Terra Alta.
The coca d’avellana is considered La Fatarella’s signature cake. Together with olive oil, it offers a tangible culinary connection to the town: the cake is notable for its special role in La Fatarella, while the oil is associated with the varieties mentioned and the DOP.
