A modernist wine cooperative, a church with an octagonal bell tower and routes to dry-stone structures offer several different ways to explore Nulles. Wine culture, architecture and archaeological history can each be discovered on their own; the routes focus on different aspects of the surrounding landscape.

Wine culture and local experiences

The Celler Cooperatiu de Sant Isidre de Nulles is a modernist wine cooperative designed by architect Cèsar Martinell. The combination of a wine cooperative and modernist architecture makes it a distinctive feature of a stay in Nulles. The #OrigenCalçotada enotourism experience combines a route through vineyards and calçot fields, a visit to the winery and a tasting of locally produced wines and cavas.

The ecological enotourism experience “Paisatge, pedra i vi” also brings together the landscape and regional products: it ends in Bellavista with a tasting of local products. These different tasting experiences complement the architectural heritage and routes through the surrounding area. Those who want to discover Nulles through its wine culture will find more than one architectural point of interest.

Church architecture and history

Construction of the Església de Sant Joan Baptista began in 1510. In the 18th century, the church was rebuilt in the neoclassical style with strong Baroque influences. Its bell tower rises in an octagonal form above a square base and is topped by a dome. Remains of Nulles Castle can be seen on the outer wall to the right. The architectural features and visible castle remains offer several specific details to look out for.

The Iberian archaeological site of Rabassats reveals a different historical period. Its central building was in use in the 3rd century BC. The western room was divided into two areas and used for domestic activities: grinding, preparing food and weaving took place there. A visit can also include Rabassats and the medieval hamlet of Casafort. The historical range therefore extends from the use of an ancient building to a medieval hamlet.

Routes with different points of interest

The Ruta dels Tanins leads to Casafort, dry-stone structures and the del Lluc forest. The route offers views across part of the municipality of Nulles, with the mountains of Prades visible in the distance. The stated journey time is about 20 minutes by bicycle and a little over half an hour on foot.

The Ruta de les Alzines leads to the hamlet of Bellavista and its chapel, as well as to dry-stone structures and the bridge of l’Hospitalet. It offers views across the surrounding area. This route therefore focuses on named landmarks and views of the landscape.

The features of the Ruta de la Síquia include the Pont de Busquets—a paved irrigation channel formerly used to obtain water—and other dry-stone structures. The route also offers very good views of Vilabella and Nulles. It is almost entirely paved; it takes about 30 minutes by bicycle and an hour on foot.

The Ruta del Forn Teuler leads to an old brick kiln and dry-stone structures, and offers good views of the hills. The estimated journey time is about 30 to 45 minutes by bicycle and an hour on foot. The old kiln gives the route its own historical focus, while the other routes mentioned highlight features such as the vineyard landscape, the forest or the irrigation channel.

Comparing the stated journey times, the Ruta dels Tanins is the shortest of the three routes with a specified cycling time. The Ruta de la SĂquia takes about 30 minutes, while the Ruta del Forn Teuler takes about 30 to 45 minutes. On foot, the Tanins takes a little over half an hour; the SĂquia and the Forn Teuler each take an hour. This lets you compare the routes by time and destination without treating their landscape and historical points of interest as interchangeable.
