Location between the Serra and the Rieras
Maspujols lies at the foot of the Serra de la Mussara, on the banks of the Riera de Maspujols and right at its confluence with the Riera Solviana, or del SolviĂ . The highest point in the municipality is the 542-metre-high Rocabruna, locally known as La Feredat. The Ermita de Sant Antoni de PĂ dua stands on a small hill, 237 metres high, right next to the town centre. The Pont de la Carretera provides a useful landmark: today it is the main entrance to Maspujols and continues to serve residents and visitors alike.
Routes and activities
Route 2, “La Bessona,” is 3.74 km long and has 92 m of positive elevation gain. It is rated easy and takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. The distance, elevation gain and estimated duration offer different points of reference for planning this loop.
The health routes in Maspujols are circular trails that start and finish at Avinguda del Poliesportiu. The network can be explored on foot; some routes are also suitable for cycling, as indicated by their respective markings. Outdoor fitness facilities are available in public spaces at Plaça de l’Oli and behind the hermitage. The Centre Excursionista de Maspujols also organises a monthly hike that is open to everyone. If you would like to join, check the date of the next hike.
Font de la Bessona
The “La Bessona” route leads to Font de la Bessona, a historic and cultural landmark. The spring is located at the upper end of a ravine and surrounded by nature. For centuries, it was a meeting place for the residents of Maspujols. The Font is once again considered a suitable place for walking and enjoying nature. As conditions may change, check the current situation before visiting.
Architectural history and the town’s name
Cal Pujol is the municipality’s first house and gave Maspujols its name. The first documentary reference to the house dates from 1305. Cal Pujol is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia and protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest.
Cal Po is also included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It is an eclectic residential building dating from the 19th century. The Pont de la Via adds a specific date to the area’s architectural history: it was completed in 1890. In contemporary newspapers, it was known as “el puente de los siete arcos.”
Olive oil from Maspujols
Local production is also part of the town’s identity: the olive oil produced in Maspujols falls under the Siurana Protected Designation of Origin, recognised for its quality. For those interested in regional produce as well as the landscape and architectural history, it offers another connection to the municipality.
