In Torredembarra, different routes lead to very different subjects: the Sender Blau explores coastal landscapes and wetlands, while a route through the historic centre takes in architectural and artistic heritage. There is also the Far de Torredembarra and archaeological traces from Roman times. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the routes by their focus and stated duration.
Coastal landscapes and trails
The Sender Blau starts at Cal Bofill, passes through the maritime neighbourhood of Baix a Mar and then runs for 2.2 km along Platja Els Muntanyans. Salt marshes, dunes and lagoons are part of this route; the area is home to up to eleven habitats of community interest. The Sender Blau first received an award from ADEAC in 2012. Cal Bofill also houses a permanent exhibition about Els Muntanyans, so the landscape route and exhibition share a common theme.
Els Muntanyans is part of the Platja de Torredembarra i Creixell natural area in the Natura 2000 network. This natural area covers a total of 65.24 hectares, of which 37.98 hectares lie within the municipality of Torredembarra. The figures distinguish the size of the entire natural area from the portion within the municipality.
The Itinerari MarĂ pel Roquer de Torredembarra offers a different coastal perspective. It starts at Platja del Canyadell, takes 45 minutes on foot and runs for 100 metres along the rocks towards the lighthouse. Here, you can observe the rocky coast ecosystem. Check local conditions before walking on the rocks.
Old town or coastal route?
The route through the historic centre is 2 km long, takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, and includes seven points of interest. It takes you through the old town’s architectural and artistic heritage and is rated easy. Parts of the route are suitable for people with reduced mobility. By comparison, the Itinerari Marà is listed as taking 45 minutes on foot; the routes also have different focuses: the historic town centre in one case, the rocky coast ecosystem in the other. This makes it possible to weigh up two specific time slots and themes.
Lighthouse and Roman villas
The Far de Torredembarra has a 38-metre-high tower that stands 58 metres above sea level. This makes it the tallest lighthouse in Catalonia. It is also the only lighthouse in the Principality of Catalonia included in the European Route of Lighthouses. The two height figures refer to different measurements: one is the tower itself, the other its height above sea level.
The Vil·la romana del Moro reveals archaeological remains of two Roman villas built one above the other. The first, a Republican villa dating from the middle of the 1st century AD, included six rooms that are thought to have belonged to a bath complex. A peristyle and a garden surrounded by colonnades are known from the High Imperial-period villa. The finds therefore offer insight into two different building phases at the site.
Building history in the town centre
The Castell-Palau dels Icart was built approximately between 1565 and 1581. It is considered the only surviving civil Renaissance building in Catalonia to have been built from scratch. The present-day Església parroquial de Sant Pere Apòstol was begun on 10 March 1677 and blessed on 4 December 1680. These two building histories illustrate different dates and types of buildings.
The former Escola Roig adds to this picture: the stately building in the Modernist style was inaugurated in 1892. Together with the church and Castell-Palau, it offers a look at buildings from different periods, without requiring the coastal trails to be part of the same route.
Note about the beach area
At Platja del Barri MarĂtim beach, there is a rest area for people with reduced mobility. It has two pergolas, each measuring 48 m², and a 30-metre-long walkway that makes it easier to access the water. Check service dates and reservation information before your trip.
